How do you guys keep your keys sorted?
 

My main keychain makes me look like a janitor. I took a few keys off of it to lighten, and promptly lost them.

The rarely used keys, such as the Porsche and Benz, et are on separate keychains. What do you guys do?

Do you use key fobs? What about the Porsche key, how do you use and store it?

Porsche keys go in the safe which is on the way to the garage. Daily driver keys sits on the table with my wallet. Each set has a house key and maybe toolbox or car cover key as well.

I leave each one in the car that it starts.

Have a different key chain for each car (with a different "trinket" for ease of recognition). Only thing on that chain is the key and fob for that car. All key chains sit in our "key bowl." I don't need keys for anything else.

Yeah, I look like a janitor too! Truck key, DD key, MR2S key, office keys, house key, shed key, bedroom key, cash box key...

I have two key rings, one with the '84 Porsche, and one with the '86 Porsche.

I split my keys between. Keys that are duplicates in shape, but not what they fit, go on the different key rings to ease confusion.

The seldom used ones I have specific places to leave them where they can be gotten to.

Only key(s) I carry is for the vehicle I drive that day.
Home & office have keypads & remotes.

house key, mom's house key, car key.

work keys (4 different filing cabinets and 2 real doors) are on a separate lanyard

p-car keys are on a separate fob in one of two places.... just don't remember which. need to get them and put them in the safe.

One ring, truck, house, car, gate. Porsche keys are in a coffee cup on the kitchen table. I went through a drawer one day and threw out about 20 keys. A lot of them I had no idea what they were for.

I have a different key ring for every use. My "Tundra key" has the three commercial building keys on it - front door has one 1/8' hole drilled in it, middle door has two holes, back door has 3.
My Volt has a house key and I carry the Tundra Key only if I'm going to the office. Same with any of my Porsches.
I hate carrying a ton of keys.

Every door on my house and shop is the same key, high end locks, cost me but it's worth every penny. My out building padlocks are also all keyed the same.
Low use keys are in my key cabinet.

Then I have separate fobs for my daily drivers and my summer cars, the most I have is 5 keys on one fob.

I try to keep the number of keys that I carry to a minimum, and have no fob or chain to add extra bulk. I do have a couple of extra items (3) on the ring, but that is carefully considered. If I have or need extra keys besides those, they go on a separate ring that usually does have a fob or chain of some sort.

If you look like a janitor, then you need to pair down some and have one ring for the most common stuff, house and car, and another ring or two for the rest.

THat, back when we had a house, at one point we had 4 or 5 keys because every or almost every door and lock used a different key. I found a place online where I was able to order matching tumblers and a couple of keys for every lock, and rebuilt every lock so that they all matched. THat day was magical!

The truck alone has 4 keys. Office uses 2. Construction yard has 2, so I'll be stuck with those for at least the next year. The new office - lord only knows. I'm going to put a key vault in the new place, so that I can keep the keys locked and sorted in there. But the problem remains that I have to lock everything. Too many damn thieves.

I haven't used these locks, but it might be one option.

Kwikset has evolved in quality and Schlage has de-evolved.
Both are similar in price and quality around the box stores here.

So I read somewhere that you shouldn't really have a bunch of all your keys together that you carry around in case you lose it. Plus to your point it gets bulky.

So all car keys are separate. House keys are separate. Safe keys are separate.

All the locks to my house, shop and my parents are keyed the same way. This way we can get in if keys are ever lost. I have that key attached to every car keys. This way I really only carry only two keys at any given time. Its even easier with keyless entry. One house key on the ring attached to the keyless fob, that's it. Keys for the rental? Now, that's a pain in the ass as they are separated and marked and numbers. If not, I'd be there for sometime.
