Share the story of how you acquired your 911

I was with my uncle when he bought his 1973 911T back in 1978, I drove his truck back. In 1980, the clutch went out and he parked it in his garage. At Christmas, 2004 i was telling my Uncle all about my 1973 914 FI. A few weeks later, my Uncle called and gave me his 911 because he said he was never going to get it running.

It took me about 8 years but she's a real beauty now, I try to drive her every weekend if it's not raining.

I always knew I wanted a 911. But which one? I arrived in the US in 2005 with a promise of a job and $300 dollars in my pocket.

Fast forward a few years, switched jobs, had a bit more disposable income and savings. Started looking in '09 or '10 on Craigslist for 911s under $15K. There were SCs...

Bought the book, The Used 911 Story in 2010.

Looked at a few more ads on Craigslist. Venetian Blue G50 for $22K. A 1995 with Tiptronic, 22.5K. Test drove that one. Was hesitating around 3-4K RPM. Decided any Tip is not for me.

Then there it was. A diamond blue 88 that has been on Craigslist for a week or two. Listed for $22K. (Or was it $20?)

Called the seller. Looked at the car. Sent it in for a PPI. Nothing needed but new tires.

Negotiated the price down to $19.5K. Brought cash, and asked a friend who was a big guy to go with me in case things go south.

Drove it away, all smiles.

Smelled like my old beetle, but faster and sounded better.

No regrets. Hope to not ever sell.

When I was single, every time a relationship went south I consoled myself with a new car, truck, motorcycle. (My "friend" told me I was either going to have to build a new garage or quit being such an ashole). My girlfriend dumped me. I needed some vehicular retail therapy and I had always kind of thought I wanted a 911. Did some research into what year and model suited my needs. Found one. Bought it.

It started when I was a boy.

I really got "into" cars at age 13 or so. When my dad was looking for a new car for the family in 1967 I urged and pleaded with him to test drive a Porsche. We went to the dealership and he test drove a 911. I was stuffed in the back seat. No way in hell dad was going to buy it. He was never a real car guy. He bought a totally boring 1966 Delta 88 with a real back seat.

I was lusting after Porsches but driving a 1960 VW bug since that was what I could afford. I got a job when I was a Junior in high school. Dad made me pay 100% of all costs of my cars except he paid for the insurance and he gave me an interest free loan on the purchase of the VW. When I was 19 I went to the local dealership and custom ordered a 1974 914 2.0 and it took 6 months to arrive. I had a loan at the local credit union in Alabama.

I moved to Oklahoma a few years later and 18 years later I got married. My wife never like the 914 since it had no AC at all except take the roof off. A few years later she twisted my arm and said I needed an air conditioned Porsche.

The hunt was on. I figured it was time to upgrade so I went looking for a 911 in 1994. I looked at a lot of pigs and abused 911s and a few nice ones. I knew I wanted a Carrera and I was not going to settle for a good enough car. In the olden days before broadband the internet was on dial up there were few if any web sites for car sales. I looked in the analog newspaper and even bough papers from other cities. Finally I found one that looked right in the Tulsa paper. A phone call and I had an appointment to go to the mans house.

It was love and lust at first sight. I drooled a lot and took it on a test drive. Instant addiction and I was hooked. The real bonus is I bough it for loan value. I was 40 and and debt free at the time. The credit union loan officer inspected the car and said the full purchase price was loan vale and I only financed 3/4 of that for a two year note. It has been paid for since 1996. I have not had any sort of car payment since.

My 911 was a daily driver for the man that I had bought it from. He parked in an underground parking garage in assigned parking next to guys with nice cars so it had no door dings at all. The interior was perfect except for seat wear which I had repaired.





I have driven it to California three times, and all the way to Maine just 30 miles from the most eastern point in the USA. Up into Canada so even internationally!

I have photos of the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans behind the car. Even the Snow covered Rocky Mountains in the background of my car.

I plan to drive my Porsche in all 48 of the contiguous states and I only have a few states left to drive through. It is at 165,000 miles and going strong.

Dad boutght the 356 in '65. In '85 he thought "I've had teh same car for 20 years..." adn started looking. 944s, 928s, and various 911s were examined, and in Nov of '88 he brought home a '84 M491 coupe.



ALS brought him down in '94. Mom didn't like driving the car, but we kept it and she'd drive it every so often. In 2000, when my daughter was born I got teh 356 up and running after an extended rest, and started driving it near daily. Mom started drivign the 911 more as well.

Eventually, mom stopped driving the car, I would drive it once a month or so, and then 2nd gear went AWOL at 72k miles (as it is wont to do). Car sat for 2 years, mom was waffling on getting it fixed, and then Shaun needed a fantastic 911.... and now it is Shauns.

The 356 got a serious case of the "melting gaskets due to that new gass with the damm ethanol in it" and has sat for 12 years now...

We are driving to Spokane this summer. I should be able to get all but the Dakotas, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Driving across Montana will not be the same as driving across Connecticut was last summer. My rules is that I need to spend enough time to have a meal and pee in a state before I consider it legitimate as having been there.

Well, after I sold my 73 1/2 911T 2.4 MFI back in 86 when we were pregnant with our third, I promised myself that soon I would get a 911 again.. (I know, kick me now)
So, when that third baby finally grew up to be about 25 or so, I began to think about 911s again. It had been many years of mostly just Subarus and mini vans.

I had a motorcycle listed for sale on Craigslist, and I had an inquiry asking would I trade it for a convertible Corvette? Sure, I say and rode over to look at the 'Vette. It was totally thrashed, but my motorcycle was just perfect. So I had to say no.

Riding home that afternoon, I thought about if I were to trade this motorcycle, what would I like to trade it for? Ha ha, a 911 of course!

Taking the longest of long-shots, I posted that day on Craigslist, Will trade my motorcycle for your 911, and never thought much about it after that.

Two days later! I get the call. He always wanted a motorcycle just like mine for sale, and he had a non-running but very nice 911 in his garage.

Three weeks of negotiating later, I trailered the 911 home, and got it running the next day!! This car has got to be a keeper for sure.
