Baz, maybe stay out of the water for a day or two.
Katherine the 14 foot shark is alive and well just in front of your house

Until you get to the biggest male blue whales, there is ALWAYS a bigger fish out there. Yea, I know a whale is not a fish but is swims the ocean.
Killer whales eat great whites for a nice snack.

Looks to me that the other fish might be maybe only 50% larger than the 14-fotter.
A 21 foot shark could have done this, but I'm no expert and will stand corrected once better evidence surfaces. ![]() Could this have been done by a baby Sperm Whale? A killer shark (orca) ? Orcas Vs Shark: Killer Whales Take Down Tiger Shark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqimOYOQjJ8 Quote:

Nope, most Surfer's would see that and think it must be well fed to leave all of that behind. Probably safe for a couple of days. Especially if there is a good swell. 😅

I grew up in Santa Barbara (60's- 80's). There was a picture in the SB News Press during that time from an abalone boat (like the one below). Guy was hauling in by the tail a large shark that was tied off the stern. The picture showed a massive shark swallowing head first up to midsection the dead shark. I still remember the picture like yesterday - the head was easily half as wide as the transom of that boat.
![]() Also had some older friends who were big into wind surfing. One of their friends attempted to sail to the channel islands and never returned. They found half his board floating in the channel - huge bite marks. |

Looks like you are at ground zero for all FL shark attacks:
Florida Map :: Florida Museum of Natural History Maybe a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_shark or a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bull_shark nibbling on a mature shark already dead? (wrinkled skin). Not hungry or they would have eaten it all. Notice the bite curve is not much bigger than the torso, so the attacker was close to similar size. |

Meh.
We have shark attacks all the time here but really and truly they are more like mistaken identities for food than "attacks". No one ever dies or even loses an appendage - mostly just sticthes or just bandages in some cases. I agree though seeing something like this is a bit unsettling. You have to just stay aware in the water....watch the bait fish and or course if you see any fins or large dark bodies swimming around below you... Before I started wearing contact lenses it was a little more hairy for me at times...lol....

Taken by my wife yesterday on the south side of the S. Jetty while I was paddling around on the north side. She said about as long as she is tall, 5'2" Salmon shark. Very common here. (Sorry about sideways photo load)

I just ran across a FB post from a friend from last September that I thought was pretty funny and applicable to this thread...

Pic of his wife headed to the beach - which is just at the end of the street there. They live about 7 blocks from me and have been surfing pretty much all their lives here. He works for the state doing planning work for roadways but helps me with machine work occasionally (he has a small track loader). Everyone knows each other here....small world, despite the damn developers trying to bring in every person in the universe.
Hey see those Norfolk Island Pine trees...they are native to the southern hemisphere (Bill knows this as well as any surfer from down under). They are the tallest growing trees on the island. People plant them in their yards from potted Christmas trees. Coming over the south bridge scanning the island treeline you can see these tree tops over the rest of the treeline. Messy bastards....
