i distilled my EDC knife choice down to "the one"

we all know i bought into some stupidass knife frenzy. now i have a box full of them..and wish i could have just invested the money in some smarter option..duh.

i carry one. i had to buy a new one, because i thought i lost my old one. and for the record, buying a replacement knife is the single best way to find the lost one.

here it is. an Victorinox ALOX FARMER. knife - staight razor sharp, saw(have not used the saw yet - it seems too thin), bottle opener (YAY), can opener (it works, but you need to practice), some pokey awl thing, great for opening boxes, flat blade screwdriver.

as a civil engineer in the field, i use it daily. from cutting opening an avocado to scraping paint from a bridge. i wash it nightly, since it sees so much food prep.

i'm gonna start giving away knives to friends..next phase of anti-hoarding.

To my dear friend Clff,

I have nothing of substance to add to this thread.

Your friend,

For me, besides having a Leek or Scallion, my goto utility knife is:

Leatherman Squirt

I had the original design Leatherman, carried it for years, and used it all the time. I broke it at the hinge of the pliers. They didn't have that tool-set on any of their products, so I sent it in with a note saying I liked my tool-set and would rather have it repaired, but I figured replacement would be in my future, so they could replace it with whatever they felt was appropriate. It came back in a week or so repaired, sharpened and cleaned. Count me as a satisfied customer who carries one every day and uses it often.

Also, I just want to mention how I've treasured our friendship Cliff, you buy cool stuff.

Those Swiss army knife saws are actually pretty good.

I fully agree. It's also my "one" knife. Have had one in my pocket for 10+ years

Except I cant leave anything I own alone and have to modify it.

I modded a Red Alox Farmer with the scissors out of the new Silver Alox Pioneer X (X is for scissors). Made new brass liners and peened new brass pins.

May I present the Farmer X.

Great mod!! I have a Victorinox somewhere, a couple of Leathermans, etc. that I never use. I carried a Swiss Army knife in my pocket for years and almost never used it. I find the knives I use most are the cheap folding knives I buy for a couple of bucks.

Funny I was just thinking last night I need to shed a few knives too. I only carry two of them regularly.

I have "The Two". Depends on what pants I'm wearing. Hehe. Swiss Army knife similar to the one above for non-denim material, and a folder with a clip for denim. Just trying to avoid the abnormal wear from the clip...

I used to fall victim when viewing a good looking knife...so much so that I now have a box full of great knives that I have never used for anything and haven't looked at in years...probably 30 - 40 or so. No more.

I have carried a Victorinox Officer Suisse with the standard red handle. I have had it for 20 years or so. The shield on the side fell off so long ago that there is almost no sign it was ever there except the small hole in the handle. I have had that same basic type knife in my pocket since I was in high school. I had one for a while long ago that had a black handle.

This is my swiss army pocket knife. It's a bit bulky for carrying in your pocket, but it sure is handy for going away somewhere. A few weeks ago I did a week away on the Honda riding through the mountains. The screw driver did a minor bike repair, corkscrew on a bottle of vino and the fish scaler worked well on a trout. I use the pliers and scissors a bit too.

I carry a Stanley 199 retractable utility knife pretty much all the time. It is great to be able to destroy the edge in the line of duty, and then have a new blade in seconds.

Not a very sexy knife though.

It isn't a knife so much as a cutting tool. And for that it is hard to beat.
