Do you do your own taxes?

I am just working on my 2016 taxes. It is certainly an interesting venture and something I take my time over. Two more months to complete it. You US guys have a different tax year I think.

I use Turbotax and have had to use override a couple of times. I think by pounding out the numbers it helps to understand the tax system better and where the money goes.

If this is too much govermint for you so be it. Turbotax is actually quite impressive. They are coming out with more features each year to make life easier....

Preparing for doing my own taxes (I use Turbo Tax) is key. Record keeping is the foundation.

I also do not hesitate to call in the pros when I have issues or need help. They are worth every penny.

I used to, until I got married. My wife has "a guy" that's a friend of her dad's, so we use him. Not something I wanted to fight over.

I have done my own taxes since the days of my Commodore 64. That was a lot of work back then.

TurboTax is pretty easy. I just got to Amazon.Com and download the Deluxe version that comes with a free state version. I download it and do it on my computer and keep that file on my system. I do not do the cloud or on line bit. Too much hacking of cloud based stuff for my tastes.

Buying from Amazon is way cheaper than getting it from Intuit directly for some reason.

I do my own every year. My taxes aren't that complicated so I use one of the free online providers. No complaints so far. Already got my return last week.

Nope. Don't do bills either. Smartest (luckiest?) thing I ever did was marrying a CPA.

Yesterday, and the day before actually. I compile all my invoices with date and who they are from from, bank charges etc, on a number of spreadsheets. Then print them and hand it in to the tax accountant. So in other words I do the cheap labor and he does the specialist work. I see no reason to be paying accountant fees for the easy stuff I can do.

I would have no idea how to do my taxes. I have a C corp and 4 LLCs, LLPswith partners, K-1s etc, etc. It would take a full time job just to learn how to do my taxes.

I own two C-Corps, two LLC's and a POAPT.

The accountants provide me with the data I need to do my own personal taxes. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Turbo Tax works fine for me. After retirement, I did everything I could to simplify my tax situation. I filed on 2/6 & got my refunds around 2/23. I still need to tweak it so I will get the smallest refund I can manage.

Been using the same guy for 20+ years now.

Not sure what I'll do when he finally retires for good.

My SIL used to do her own, then her boyfriend at the time, finance guy, did them for a bit.

She always complained about how much she had to pay.

One year we convinced her to use our guy.

She comes by the house when he's supposed to come by to do ours.

He ends up getting delayed by an unexpected complication with the client he was with.

She gets all bent out of shape "how unprofessional, blah, blah....)

Told her if she had to go she should leave her stuff and it would get taken care of.

He comes, does both our taxes, makes some comments about how poorly her previous returns were prepared then leaves.

I call her and tell her "you're done", she asks, "how much?" I said roughly $10k.

She flips out, she's never had to pay that much before, my guy sucks, she's not paying him.

I said you don't understand, you don't owe anything, you are getting $10k back.

Long silence followed by "next year he can be as late as he wants to be"

Thanks for the reminder, I need to knock it out. I screwed up a few stock sales and struggled over a k1 a few times but turbo tax usually makes it straight forward. We all look at it differently, I figure most of the work is compiling the records and only I can do that.

The minute you start having a retirement account, IRAs, investments, it become absolutely mind boggling. I wouldn't have the first clue anymore. If anything good comes out of these next 4 years it might be a tax code reform...

TurboTax for me. But I don't own any business or have any registered LLCs. No rentals either. Apart from stocks and options, everything is pretty straightforward.
