Funny all this ... I have a tatted assistant that works rings around all the more traditional staff. She would be most difficult to replace. More so than the rest who are not duffers. Had I said no because she has tats it would have been my loss. And she is bilingual to boot.

I've often wondered how much refusing to cut my hair when I was a young punk made an impact on my life.
I just would not take jobs where they wanted me to cut my hair and be all clean cut, and , in the 80's, this could be reality . I had several employers tell me I would have to cut my hair to work there. I just went elsewhere. "No smart wife killin' banker was going to tell me where the bear ****s in the buckwheat. " Like the fast one says. I had to take jobs that may had been a little bit rougher around the edges, but ultimately , made me man up, and not be a puss anymore . If you wanna be different, you gotta except that you are going to be treated different. Just they way it is . That being said, I think also think she is cute. Not offensive at all . Probably a whiny little pia though. |
I think this is why she was not hired.

On a whim - I just looked in Facebook and found her account. No terribly incriminating pictures that I saw, but did take a screen snapshot - work experience and education? Granted, Facebook isn't a resume, but..... recent two spotty short term jobs - and she "done some learns"?

Great class if you are into ranching. Anyways.... No kidding, this class explained how if a son or daughter returns to take over a cattle ranch from the parents you need to do up a contract. This contract needs to indicate you returning will make the ranch "X" much money in extra profit. Not loss, profit. To cover the loss the ranch would be getting by taking you back in. So many cute girls think that tattoos, multiple piercings, wild clothing, and multicolored hair give them character and individuality. I say, it really makes them like cheap whores......just completely not my style.
I can't believe the money they spend trying to look that way as well, could be better spent on some decent threads, and a nice haircut, to get that job they want. I worked 15 years on a hot rubber factory production floor, before I got my nice A/Cd prototype job with the same company. Working like that 7 days a week for months on end builds some muscle, work ethic, and character that so many millenials could use. |

Foolish interviewer.
Never judge an applicant by their appearance AND THEN TELL THEM ABOUT IT! Sheesh! If you don't get a good vibe from someone of they come dressed in a style far outside your company norm, they didn't do their homework. If they didn't do their homework to get the job they probably won't do it to keep the job either. Be polite, expedite the rest of your interview, thank them for coming in, and toss their app in the trash. They wasted your time and theirs. I hire a lot of people and many have had shaved heads, tats, beards or other personal style cues over the years. Many have been immigrants from Europe, central and south America, and a few from Africa. We work with the public but no longer in a retail setting. In 40 years of doing business it is rare for a client to complain about appearance but if they feel ignored or if the employee was rude or hostile they are quick to comment. I have chosen not to hire based on employment history, personal hygiene, self-absorbed attitude, and in a few cases, simply too attractive. A few absolutely stunning women have applied for office positions and I would be working very closely with them. Far too much temptation in very close proximity... not going there. I simply chose someone "more uniquely qualified for the position". |
She looks fine. This is a low end, main street retail job. If she is otherwise qualified, then her appearance is no problem.
Whether she is qualified, none of us really know. Expecting a Facebook page to read like a CV is silly; I imagine many of your FB pages wouldn't thrill a hiring manager. If her LinkedIn page read that way, that's a different story. I agree with angela that something else may be going on. Unemployment in the UK is 4.9%, so they are overall at essentially full employment, like the US. Maybe she is a high school dropout or comes off weird or something. |

When I hire someone, I look at several things. 1) Will they fit in with my current staff, 2) will they get along with all of my customers, 3) will their appearance intimidate customers (unless hiring a bouncer or similar), 4) do they seem to have obvious issues or mental problems that might come back to haunt me/cost me customers or other good employees, 5) do they seem responsible, 6) do they have good judgment, 7) do they seem honest, 8) are they potentially a long term employee worth the effort to train?
By nature, most small business owners are and have to be very conservative as they generally do not have sufficient capital to make too many mistakes. One lawsuit will put you out of business...even if you win. Also, it is much , much harder to fire than to hire right in the first place. Although the woman is dressed ok, one would assume that a person look the best and most conservative when they are being interviewed and will look less put-together over time. If you hire a person with strange hair, visible tattoos and piercing implies that you find those as cool and acceptable as the wearer does. One can only assume that once they start getting a regular paycheck from you, they will add additional "art". The fact that she shaved the sides of her head (can't see it much in the one photo) to look like "tank girl" is enough to make me not hire her...similarly the visible tats and nose ring. If she wants a entry level job dealing with the public and is not smart enough to ensure that she has can cover up any art that she might have, then she is just not too bright. Posting attacks against a potential employer and her stupid rationale even further prevents her from getting a good job. To think employers cannot use the internet/google is silly. If you have some sort of mad skills, you may well be able to do whatever you want. The rest of us have to remain within societal norms. Where I work, short hair and a dark suit are expected. If you interview differently, you will find it very difficult to overcome your image as the rest of your experience, skills, education are likely really not as special as you think. |
