Fantastic article on the BMG
I myself didn't know the long and decorated history of this iconic weapon.
Hail to Mr. Browning. https://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2017/2/23/the-50-cal-browning-machine-gun-the-gun-that-won-the-war/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=insider&utm_campaign=0217

Most of his stuff was pretty well designed. The fact that some are still in use today is testament to that.

Most of his stuff was well-designed with what we know now, what is amazing is how much of what we know now that is due to Mr. Browning.

Set up on a mount in semi-auto mode they are apparently incredibly accurate out to stupid long ranges.

Yes very cool that you have a pic of your Dad in action, river rat huh?
Those 50 cals were mounted on the top of the coupula of our M48 tanks in Nam. Its really easy to burn thru a couple of cans of ammo really quickly if someone is rude enough to set off a flair in your parameter wire, or heaven forbid shoot an RPG at you in the night. We would sit behind it on watch at night with a few extra can close to hand. Yes they can reach out there, or really fill an area closer to hand. The BAR 30cal also comes to mind as an exceptional light auto. Too. Greetings to your Dad from me Ayles. Cheers Richard Last edited by tevake; 03-01-2017 at 07:17 PM.. |

![]() Just thought I would add as this a supplement to the photo I posted previously. I had lost track of the article above and just found it this afternoon.

Ayles your father is a true hero. Viet Nam was 'my war'. No I wasn't in the service as I was literally 2 years to young but I remember coming home from school in the late 60s early 70s and turning on the TV. Draft numbers would run along the bottom of the screen. My older brother had his draft number and we'd sit there and watch to see if he got drafted, (never did but joined the Navy after high school). Not sure how much you know about the war but unlike today those service men came back to protests, name calling, you name it. Nothing like today's heroes. I hope your Dad didn't have to deal much with that.
Anyway thanks for the post and article.

He killed a young kid on a bicycle. He had been watching this kid riding his bike back and forth on top of a levee, with rifles is the basket one way, empty the other. His first shot knocked the front wheel out from under him and scattered the rifles. Intended as a warning. The kid didn't listen... The kid picked one up, inserted a magazine, and not knowing how far away that shot had come from, started spraying down the area. Just like he knew what he was doing. Just like he had done it dozens of times in the past. The Gunny's next shot centered him.

Man, taking care of his mates, nothing more noble..Mic drop as they say these day's. The pic looks like a training run but by God ya have to have'em. When it's the scrum, its rare someone grabs a picture. But its the practice that matters, its what leads in the hash. And it was pretty apparent it payed in spades. For some reason it's moving to me how young he was, or all of them back then in that. You don't notice how young they were till you are mid-life seeing 18 year olds in harms way. Weird. When the devil drives. Thanks for the service, gets old but I hope he knows.-WW |
