Need a Nice Fixed Blade Knife as a BSA ES-COH Gift...Ideas?

Our troop will be awarding 7 scouts (including my Son) with the Eagle Rank. The boys would like to give the Scoutmaster and two influential leaders a gift of a fixed blade knife. Several ideas were proposed but they decided on the fixed blade. Could be a show piece or functional. They have a budget of $50 for each knife - $150 total. The Eagle Scout Court of Honor is at the end of April so there are a few weeks to get the knives. Any ideas?

I can't comment on specific brands, but I suggest that the style should be both attractive and functional, especially designed to be something that Boy Scout troop leaders or other outdoorsmen would find useful. Why don't they research the type of knife and features they think would make the knives most useful first? Then when they know what they're looking for they can compare price, quality and brands. Giving a gift of respect and thanks is a good thing, but too often the gift turns out to be just a token of appreciation when a little extra thought and effort can turn the token of appreciation into a lasting, useful (and used) memory rather than something that ends up in a special drawer somewhere and only remembered when it is happened upon.

Oh man! If I had more warning I could talk to a friend who custom makes knives. I'd even toss in a deer antler for the handle.

Morakniv makes some nice fixed blades with a scandi grind, good for whittling or general bushcraft use. Not expensive but great value, comes in carbon steel too.

No recommendations on the knife, but congrats to your Son on making Eagle. My Son is an Eagle as well. I only made 1st class before I got interested in girls and gasoline.

I have arranged knife gifts a few times.

What really makes this gift personal is to spend $15 having them laser etched with the recipients name and who it is from. I still have the hunting knife that my dad had engraved for me when I was 10. The knife wasn't expensive but the engraving makes it a keepsake.

Marbles...they have been making them forever, if you can still find them. There are Marbles BSA, antique knifes on Fleabay all the time. You can't get more traditional or historic.-WW

edit* Looks like they sold out somehow, to China. Maybe the name or whatever, so's unless you get a antique one, the steel may be in question.

W.R.Case

I would recommend taking look at Case. Still manufacturered in Bradford, PA, they do have a Boy Scout Collection, although it appears to be limited to folders. They do however make fixed blades and will custom engrave them as well.

Ours were beat to heck... I think we got them at the army surplus store... opened cans with them... ate with them... poked at the fire with them... stabbed them in the dirt to clean them...

Someone call child services!!!!

I have a small collection of damascus blade Bowie knives and would be happy to donate one for your presentation. Send me a PM and we can go from there.
