I've seen them all and like them. The latest one has an homage to the original with a long drag racing scene.

I made it 5 minutes on the first one. At the age of 12 it may have been cool. Sort of like the Dukes of Hazard.

How many times did they shift into 6,7, and 8th gear?

If I learned anything from these movies, as well as Tom cruise.. ..it is that one can gain speed when at redline in top gear, by downshifting....

Personally they've never been my thing but the kids love the movies and they all "bank" big dollars for the producers.
From the little I've seen of them the acting isn't too horrible either.

When I think back to the car movies of the 70s and 80s. I remember movies that were simple and wholesome.
Somehow it took less to entertain us then.

I saw the trailer for the current one (#8 or #9?) and decided that cars driving on ice being chased by a submarine and then Vin batting away a torpedo that was fired at him from the sub and the torpedo destroys the bad guys chasing him was a little over the top. My 4 year old grandson saw the same trailer and wasn't impressed either.........

Thinking about this further. Just one observation about the "franchise." I hope I don't offend but...

IMO "They" may have used Paul Walkers death to promote the movies.
Not directly but the story of Paul's death lingered in the media a long time and consequently a lot of younger people were talking about it.
At the time I commented it was like the death of Diana Spencer (Princess of Wales). Lots of people all over the world.

Maybe it's legit but the "old coot" in me feels that someone may have been manipulating the media from the outside. (like that never happens)

i like the movies..

at this point, i'm just watching to see what the eff they are gonna come up with. drag racing a submarine is a bit over the top tho..haha.

i do crack up at the ubiquitous street party where there is one lowrider with the huge stereo system bumping and a bunch of hot ladies in the tightest mini skirts all undulating to the rhythm waiting to sex up the racer dudes. i did some street races as a dumb kid, and it was NOT like that. our hot ass flag girl was an overweight guy name ed..and he stuttered.

Took the kids to ff8 this weekend. Like listening to the motors no matter how dumb the plot. Some funny bits and Helen Mirren... beats the heck out of the CG of the super hero movies .. to each his own, most movies and TV shows require much imagination and suspension of disbelief....

The stats are interesting but also sort of skewed. The decline in box office in 2 and 3 occurred when Vin Diesel wasn't in the films - the studio felt he wasn't worth the $20m he asked and he had the Riddick and XXX movies to shoot. They caved (perhaps too completely - hence some behind the scenes and story issues), and they've been making money hand over fist ever since.

(Ironically, the same thing happened with XXX: despite the first being a hit, they wouldn't meet his price for the sequel, had a bomb with a new lead, then had to pay thru the nose to bring him back.)

The decline in street racing scenes was after pressure from law enforcement, which saw the films as fanning the flames of a dangerous trend, like motorcycle films back in the day.

Reportedly, 9 and 10 will be the last (Vin turns 50 this year and 54-55 by then, and a middle-aged lead in an outlaw/rebel youth-oriented franchise can't last much longer).

one of the worst movies I have never seen.

started to watch it but the acting (paul walker) was not only too bad but the movie itself was bad.
I heard he was a nice guy and hate that he died (unfortunately his movies did not die) but there was no big loss in the acting world.
