I went to Spring Break in Boca Raton in March, 1993. That's when the Blizzard of '93 just crushed the whole East Coast. We behaved very badly. We drove from Pittsburgh to Boca with a case of Schaeffer pounders, only stopping for gas. We relieved ourselves into the empty cans and tossed them out the window. We arrived at the beach with our last three Schaeffers to watch the sun rise. After a week of drunken debauchery, we simply did not believe the weather forecasts and started on the journey home. It got cold in GA and by SC it was a full blown blizzard. Fortunately, we had stopped for more beer and fireworks. We somehow ended up on a hwy that was closed to all traffic. It wasn't plowed, but since there were no other cars, we weren't worried about hitting anything, as we shot fireworks out the car windows. When we finally saw other cars in WV, the traffic backup was so bad, we turned the car off and fell asleep .... on the hwy. A cop woke us up, but we were still boxed in by thousands of other cars. Somehow we managed to go in reverse to the previous exit and took back roads to get back to the PA Turnpike. That would have been such a memorable trip if I could remember much more of it.

Three Spring Breaks in Ft. Lauderdale beginning in '80 where I/we honed our drinking CRAFT (well over a case per day)...vaguely, and I mean very vaguely recall some girl from Purdue.

Can't Remember A Freakin' Thing.....

That was before Ft. L shut it down....good times

Just came from Daytona last weekend. Took my family down for a couple of beach days while my kids were on the K-12 spring break. Plenty of folks from all over the US on their college spring breaks. Between my oldest daughter (16) and one of her friends (17) I had to fight the urge to hit the local walmart for a cheap shotgun.

Forget the war stories. Yesterday I fished the spectacular Metolius river with my Son and his friend. Lovely day. Beyond perfect river. Didn't even see evidence of fish. Didn't matter. It was good.

Back during my first year of college, one of my old high school buddies and I decided we had to do something. We attended different junior colleges and still lived at home. We loaded up one of our cars with camping gear, fire wood, plenty of food and an ice chest with only sodas. We were not savvy enough to procure any beer (legal age in Texas 21). We headed down to Corpus Christi and crossed over to the north end of Padre Island. This is the National Seashore end, not the "Party" end down by Port Isabel. We drove down the beach as far as we could and found a deserted area to set up our camp. After eating we had a good fire going as the sun went down. We were just sitting in the sand, staring at the fire in the dark, bemoaning the fact that we were just some loosers, when we noticed some headlights coming down the beach. A car pulls up and two girls climb out. They were from the University of Missouri and had been driving all day. They asked if they could share our fire and pulled out an ice chest of beer. Well, somehow things worked out great after all.

After 24 hrs non-stop we finally pulled onto the beach in Daytona and set up to swill some beer. Soon a big RV pulls up and three white, and I mean white like typing paper white, babes in bikinis jump out all excited to be on their on their way to Key West. They climb up the ladder to the roof of their rig hauling chaise lawn chairs.

A few hours later they come down but were no longer white. My guess is they ended up in the ER with SEVERE sunburn.

What kind of gentleman doesn't offer to rub sunscreen on these poor girls?

Spring break 1972. 3 of us piled into my friend’s mother’s Camaro & headed south to Biloxi, MS. All of the jock crowd were heading to Florida but we wanted to be different.

We were strip-searched at US Customs in Windsor because they found some pot seeds in the seat fold. That took a few hours, but they did finally let us through. We stayed at a KOA campground in Biloxi where we did odd jobs for free tent space, drinking beer & ogling the owner’s hot daughter. A side trip to New Orleans one day resulted in a drugged beer in the French Quarter at a seedy place called Papa Joe’s with a girl casual dancing on the bar. We hit the streets after ˝ a draught & we were all stoned for 2 hours. We always wondered what would have happened if we finished the beer.

Back in Biloxi, we scored a lid of so-so pot the last night & we smoked like fiends that night & for the whole drive back, stopping at a car wash near Toledo to vacuum the car out. We gave our last joint to the attendant. I drove the last 5 hour stretch, with the window down despite the cold, stopping at every major wayside gas station for a Coke to try to stay awake until Toronto while my compatriots slept. A 27 hour non-stop drive – (except for gas, tolls & the carwash).

It was an adventure.

iirc there were 2 Papa/Pappa Joe's. One was a big touristy place & the other was the seedy one. It was a strange experience. We were drinking the beer & watching the pitiful peeler on the bar & my buddy nudged me & asked: "Are you getting off?" When we realized we were all blitzed, we hit the street & walked down to the river to chill out. It was the middle of the day.

I have a lot of odd road stories . . .

Ian

There was nothing wilder and crazier than spring break in Palm Springs CA.
So wild and crazy that there hasn't been a spring break in PS since the late 80s!

Daytona Beach, 1976. I was chasing the baseball dream and was in South Carolina visiting my parents before I headed back to California.

Friend of mine called, SAE fraternity guy at the University of Georgia:

"Come on, let's go." He probably added, "Pussy."

So I did.

I met a young lady from the University of North Dakota the first night. She was lump in your throat, hard to swallow good looking. And funny, gracious and apparently a Saint.

Unfortunately, the only thing we consummated over Spring Break was an agreement that I would visit Grand Forks (way out of my way) on my way back west.

So I did.
