What have you owned for a longtime, use daily and just found out is valuable?

I admired a pair of Oakley Juliet sunglasses owned by one of our resident Germans. Bought them and have successfully kept from losing them....guessing going on 18 years. Made of Titanium they are pretty much Joe Bob proof, though I do go thru lenses. Prolly 1-3 sets of a year but aftermarket copies are reasonable. I've never kept a pair of glasses more than a year prior to that.

I had misplaced them for about a week. Tore the cars apart, looked in all the usual places including my tool boxes, office, called my Momz (I did some repairs at the house), all over the garage and repeated all the areas at least three times....

They were in a overcoat I wore to a court/bail appearance on a client I had picked up. We had a BRIEF cold snap so I dressed impotent....snappyish....anyways, had a game today and took them with me.

They don't work well with the on and off use of my mask when making calls behind the plate....

When I observed some little monsters passing them around in the dugout......I went over between innings with a WTF look on my face.

Little katzenjammer snots siad "Hey, Blue...these are worth BANK!"......seems that NOS go for $600+ on EvilBay and $300 or more used. They are NLA from Oakley.

WOW! Nobody died and I got them back in my bag but covered this time.....never thought that anything except my Porsche that I had bought new was now considered vintage....

Anybody else?

Wow! Jim Jannard gave me a new pair of those about 20 years ago. I gave them to my little brother.

How about a pool cue? Palmer Model M from the 2nd catalog. Bought new in the early 70's for $125. Current value is several thousand. Not really used for years tho. Pool was too time consuming when I had a biz to run, a child to raise, etc. So, it sat in a closet for a few decades. After retirement, I decided to play again...when I uncased it, I quickly learned it was a "collectable"...

A bunch of old Italian steel bikes I raced on. Bit and pieces of parts in boxed under my parent's house. I come to find out they are worth lots-o-money. Its not that important as I am not really interested in dealing with tire kickers or selling them.

Had this chair by Hans Coray for about 35 years. I didn't just now find out it's worth something tho. He studied with and was friends with Charles Eames. I was told this came from Eames's home.

^^^ Your chair reminds me of some we used to hate at LA County (the hospital). When I was a student, we'd make rounds on the wards. We'd hold conferences in rooms in the hospital. Being a county facility, they were always stocked with mismatched furniture. Typical government surplus. And these dinky raw aluminum ones were always the last ones anyone would pick on which to sit. So as a med student, at the low end of the totem pole, I'd frequently sit on them.

But far from being cold and uncomfortable, they were actually pretty comfy. And light. And beingade out plain aluminum, they never looked worn or ragged. I always wanted proverbially to take one home. Heck, no one else wanted 'em.

Only a couple years later did I realize they were probably real surplus Emeco Naval Chairs. The kind Designs Within Reach sells for about $400 each.

Actually, that one looks like a refinish with a not original wrap. Only one I've seen have a white with green specs Courtland (irish linen fishing line) wrap. Here's a poor point & shoot pic of mine..

A bottle of 2008 "The Prisoner" bought for $32 or so and now worth over $300 bucks. The brand was sold and I've got a good bottle of the original.

What have you owned for a longtime, use daily and just found out is valuable?

To meet 3 criteria makes it is a tough one to answer.

I bought 2 Murano mid century glass lamps for 900, used them in my bedroom for a time, then one day I was cruising on the net and found that they are worth in the 9K range. The surprise was not that they were good but how valuable.

Another wood Arts and Crafts floor lamp I bought for $500, took it in to a lamp restorer in Covina, CA to get a repro glass shade fitted...he said not knowing who made it it was worth $2500 but if you could find out who made it...$20,000. That surprised me a bit.

How bout Colt Pythons...

My Rolex 5513 Sub was my daily for about 20 years. It hasn't been worn much in 10 years because the dial looks like crap. Spoke to a friend that is into Rolexes and he said for me not to replace the dial as the crazing makes it unique and collectors like it. I still think it looks like crap.

The trick is that you have to wear them to use them. I wore them once to annoy someone I know that would think they are outlandishly distasteful.

I recently found another pair of jeans by the same maker only this new pair were more sedate and thus more wearable. If you sat down and looked at the quality of material and construction of those jeans vs another brand it would be like comparing a Maybach to a Chevy.

In the 60's American denim makers bought new denim weaving machines that produced 60 inch wide material vs the old machines that produced 36 inch wide material. The Japanese bought those old machines and that is why their denim is sought after as being about the best. Evisu which is made in Japan even uses Lee jeans early 20th century patterns. That is one brand that I have never seen a real pair in a Thrift...lots and lots of fakes. I have even found a pair of real nearly new Brioni jeans that fit in a store. That btw is a $750 pair of jeans for $10. But no Evisu Japan's? Two EU editions though.
