I understand, and if I was looking for a project I would be after this one. But I have an '88 that has had its engine out for 18 months and I can't seem to find time to finish it. The last thing I need is another project sitting on the shelf to wait while I get the '88 finished.

How profitable are Starbucks these days? The one I got to on Sunday mornings and now and again in the afternoon is always packed. But each sale is $5 or less on average I would think. how does the math work out?

$22k for a 190k mile car that needs work isn't very compelling.

You may re-think that statement if you look at the latest market update in the June issue of Excellence.

Excellence is always about 50% full of crap. Look at what actual cars are SELLING for, not listing prices. There are some pretty darn decent air cooled 911s that have sold recently on BaT for about $30k. Cabs in particular are really struggling to bring good money, except for really exceptional cars. That's on BaT, which typically brings pretty good money. I think the really exceptional cars are going to stay in the stratosphere, but the drivers are starting to return to reality. Not that we're ever going to see a $10k air cooled 911 again, but this isn't a $50k car either.

The plot thickens. I told my friend that it's a nice car and Mrs WD loved it, but it needed work and we don't need another project. He called back a few hours later and asked what it needed and said he would call the dealer and get an estimate and either adjust the price or have them fix it.
The list I gave him: bearing noise/growling from the rear engine running on 5 cylinders rubber suspension bushings fan belt rust in door sill

Sounds like a $10,000 car if you do the math.

I have no idea what a dealer would charge for all that.

If it's a Porsche dealer, 20 grand for the engine and 20 grand for the rest

Chances are you'd have to sell your Speedster to cover most of it.

My '88 leaked a small amount of oil until I changed back to dino oil. The oil leak stopped.

dino oil creates sludge in the engine, sludge plugs up minder gasket leaks.
Question is : is sludge in the engine better then a minor leak?

It can, but that doesn't mean it does. If you drive it like you stole it, do so regularly and do regular oil changes, there shouldn't be any sludge problems. But then I always changed my oil after a spirited drive, while it was still scalding hot, and I never let it go past the recommended interval. My oil always looked new coming out.
