I'm trying to remember who it was but a few years back was watching some racing and they were back in the pits.

There were a couple of riders being interviewed, these guys were in the Rossi, Spencer, Lawson league, they were asked what they ride on the street and one of them replied, "I don't ride motorcycles on the street, too dangerous" and the others just nodded "yeah"

Reminiscent of Schumacher's accident, after years in F1 getting hurt skiing? Hopefeully he comes out of it OK, no updates as of today, still critical.

And also reminiscent of Bob Wollek's death right before the 2001 12-Hours of Sebring, also on a bicycle. Keeping the "Kentucky Kid" in my thoughts...hoping for a positive outcome.

This really upset me, as both a giant fan of Nicky, who always kept it sane and humble and was available to his fans, and as a cyclist. Positive thoughts his way.

Just "drove" his route using info published as to where this happened and using google street view. Nicky was on a narrow country road along the Misano raceway, heading out for a ride. He had a stop sign at the intersection where this occurred, and the driver did not. Not that that matters...

Yup...I am pretty wasted. Been sipping an old bottle of Basil Hayden's (of all things) bourbon that I found in the liquor cabinet...obviously my mood ain't straight, but this is terribly upsetting. And not feeling good at all about Chris Cornell, either.

I was really wondering about the riding in a group of 14 story but he was the only one hit or he was separated from the group. As a road rider myself, that didn't make a lot of sense. It happens, but not often.

I just keep thinking back to that always happy and smiling little kid racing a YSR50 and get choked up. Be strong Nicky we're all praying for you.

On May 17, 2017, Hayden was hit by a car while riding his bicycle near Rimini, Italy.[39] The crash occurred at the intersection of via Ca' Raffaelli and via Tavoleto in Misano Adriatico. Hayden was traveling west on via Ca' Raffaelli when he was struck by a car as he entered the street to cross via Tavoleto. The driver of the car stated that he was on his way to work when Hayden passed through a Stop sign and suddenly appeared in front of him. He was unable to avoid a collision.[40] The speed of the driver is not yet known but the impact of Hayden slamming into the windshield was strong enough to completely shatter it and dent down the roof of the car. Hayden's bicycle was found in the nearby ditch with its frame snapped in half.[41] According to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport a security camera recorded the crash, displaying Hayden apparently not halting to a stop sign and possibly distracted by his iPod.[42]

Hayden was taken to Rimini hospital with severe injuries. At 6:00 p.m., four hours after the accident, Rimini hospital staff announced that he had been moved to the major trauma unit at the Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Cesena for possible surgery. It was widely reported by mainstream media that Hayden was put into a medically-induced coma for surgery, which is not the case according to Hayden's father Earl. "Nicky was never placed into a coma nor has he received any surgery as his condition is too severe to operate."[43] Hayden sustained a traumatic brain injury as well as a broken femur, broken pelvis, and multiple fractured vertebrae.[44] Five days after the accident, Hayden died in the hospital on 22 May 2017.[45][46]
