My neighbor's new obnoxious and annoying flood light.....
It was installed a couple weeks ago. I waited for the right opportunity to mention to the husband that their new flood light was blinding me and thus very annoying and asked if he could try to adjust it so it doesn't blind me. The wife is prone to emotional hysteria so wanted to talk to only the husband. They are both smokers and drinkers so we're not dealing with the most practical of human beings. Just took these photos a few minutes ago. Doesn't look like anything has changed since our conversation a few days ago. I will wait 1 more week and then make my move (think concentration camp lights mounted on my garage corners). For the record, I have had 2 twin floodlights on my garage corners since buying my place 20 years ago, but they currently aim sideways - not towards them. I pointed this out to my neighbor but - whatever - ball is in his court for 7 more days.... If a neighbor asked this of me, I would have resolved the problem in less than 15 minutes.....smh.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1495420148.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1495420148.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1495420148.JPG |
Invite them over for a drink, then arrange seating so your back is to their light, they have to face it.....
Hand them sunglasses, and put this on endless loop: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cHkaIHRK35g" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I feel for you... older lady behind our house, specifically right behind where our master bedroom is, paranoid, leaves lights on inside and out 24/7.
I tried making contact and being friendly... she actually has a note on her front door saying something along the lines of leave me alone or I'll call the cops. A couple summers ago it was hot, as usual, we sleep with high windows/blinds above our bed open. I decided, heck with it... at like 3am I grabbed a welding glove from the shop, hopped the wall separating our properties and unscrewed the 2 flood lights just enough that they went out! Problem solved!! Took her a year and a half to realize they were out and call a handyman! This past month she got moved to a home by her son. Hoping the new neighbors don't leave the lights on all the time. Best of luck with your situation. |

1. I don't want to have a drink with them - especially in my driveway 2. I know I didn't mention this in the OP but I encouraged my neighbor to come over and stand in my driveway as part of the re-adjustment process to help evaluate the issue as he goes along If anything, I could drop copies of these photos in his mailbox with a carefully worded note politely asking for some relief....(with cc to file, of course) ;) |
Gamo Whisper.

Unconscious neighbors...Ugh!!! What drudgery they are.
Mine are young and selfish. Oh, and defensive. |
Check with local zoning. Might be an ordinance against light/light pollution/adjoining property.
|
It starts with a light and ends with toilet seats in the trees.

Thanks for the replies and humor thus far.....guess this was more of a rant than asking for input, although input is always welcome and might actually be helpful.
I also realize some of you have stories of your own to share (such as Cooper's in post #3)...which is cool. I really don't want to rat them out to the local authorities. I've never done that to anyone in my entire life and don't want to start now. I've always believed that to be bad karma, as well as what people do when they are too cowardly or weak-minded to handle things on their own. I also do not want to start a feud or promote hard feelings. The concept I have about shining my lights in their direction is how I will probably proceed - and hopefully they will see for themselves how annoying it is, and do the right thing by me. The electrician who installed the lights is a friend of mine and I will call him tomorrow and find out how many lumens those lights are. He might also catch some grief for installing them without regard to how they impact the neighbors (me). He knows I live here...just oblivious.... |
High output lasers are pretty cheap...
What is the difference between the two? A simple matter of focus... ...your move. :D |
I agree with "dad911" about checking out the local regs. If the light is against local regs, I'd let them know and since they are being insensitive, you will inform the correct people. What do you care, you're not going to be friends with them anyway. I'd also suggest they put in a motion sensor controlled light and tell them it is more affective at discouraging potential intruders as well as being cheaper to run, since it only goes on when triggered.
P.S. I have motion sensor lights on the sides of my house pretty much all around. They are really great for lighting the way if I walk outside after dark. |

That's not a light.
Here's how I deal with the neighbor's obnoxious light. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1495429269.jpg And by the way, I have two. |

I do hope it sinks in. Maybe on Wednesday? |

I suggest a 22 LR sub-sonic round instead. So quiet they won't even self eject. |
I had the same problem several years ago. Guy across the Bayou had his light shine right at my back door. I went over and talked to him, problem solved.

You need to read this email exchange: SmileWavy
"I cant help it if some of the light goes across the road. Put something up in your window." |

Probably offer some free security for your property.
Just give hime a nice "Thanks man" and he'll probably take it down in a week. SmileWavy |
Feel your pain. We have an older European neighbor whose 40-something son still lives with her.
Contrary to local ordinance, she rents a room in her house as well. One lodger decided he needed to park in front of my house since I had shade trees. I tried to reason with homeowner and appeal to her good graces. Found out quickly that she had none. So when the son decided to park his 18-wheel tractor sans trailer in the street for about 4 days straight, I looked up the zoning laws again. One quick call to the popo and son had a $400 ticket. |

Do the above, then tell them you watched a house guest--can't tell which one--drunkenly smash it the night before. ;) |
Maybe a nice screen of Bamboo :p
|
Maybe it's time to recycle an old mirrored closet door. Set it up in your driveway and adjust it so the light shines back into their windows. Maybe they'll get the hint.
|
Remember, OUTSIDE the box. Ya gotta make him really WANT to turn off that light.

I had beautiful views of the night sky. Could lean back in the hot tub and see the Milky Way. Then my neighbor installed these damn Kleig lights around his garage. It's like he's scanning the darkness for enemy bombers.

Check out the international dark sky association web site: Lighting
They have a "My neighbors Lights" tab that has some good information. |
When moved into this house there was a back yard outdoor security light from the city. It's just one of those orange street lights only it's in the corner of my back yard. It's not a glaring flood light, just an orange light on a pole like neighborhood street lights.
Right after moving in one of the neighbors came over and gave me enough to pay 1/2 a years worth of the the light bill. They wanted to make sure I didn't turn it off. They have been paying half the security light bill for 15 years. Another neighbor complained it was shining in her bedroom window. Called the city and they put a shade on it so shines everywhere except her property. It goes right up to the top of my stockade fence then is shaded. About a month later that same neighbor asked to have the shade taken off. Decided her back yard was too dark without the light and also gives me 1/2 the light bill. There are two other newer neighbors that complained the light shined in their bedroom windows as well. Got em shaded and they changed their minds as well, but sadly no more money. |

I called power company and asked for mine to be turned off, I like it dark at night. They told me there was no light on the pole, I thanked them, and hung up. Went out back with a BB Gun and shot it out. The other one (neighbors) was next to my bedroom window, I kindly requested he to ask for a shade or something to stop lighting up my backyard. She never got off her lazy ass to request a thing. Fast forward about 3 years my tree was growing into the light and blocking my backyard, I am now happy. Fast forward 3 more year, it is now blocking the light in her yard too. She asked me to trim the tree. I will let you guess if I did. |

I like sammy's bargain mirror solution. Careful with parabolic mirrors though, might set someone's house on fire if the sun is wrong, or right I guess. |
Hey everyone....again I appreciate the suggestions and humor. Good stuff!
The thing is.....I truly do not want to escalate the situation. It has nothing to do with being worried about what the neighbor would do. It has to do with my desire to take the high road. That said...I do have a plan. :D Seems like putting up a security floodlight of my own....would be the least offensive move on my part and might actually help mitigate the blinding effect from the neighbor's light. Fight fire with fire but in a way that doesn't seem extreme....such as the idea with the reflective material would have been. So...if "we" are concerned with security...the more lighting we have...the better. Right? I picked this up today at HD. Only $99. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1495492914.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1495492914.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1495492914.JPG I also called my electrician friend who installed my neighbor's lights and he said the neighbor had bought them and they were about 100 watts. He agreed with me that the neighbor should aim them more downward. Well.....at any rate....when I install mine - at least I will be able to see on my side of the street again. Going to make sure my motion sensor will detect anything on their side of the street and for it to stay on for 1/2 hour. Depending on things play out...I may get a second one for the other corner of my garage. Let there be light! Will keep everyone posted.... |

I have 4 500 watt lights pointed at my neighbors house.
I have a big back yard and put them up so my daughter could ride her horse at night if she wanted or the kids could play or just so we could see. they are rarely on and I don't leave them on. in fact, cant remember last time I had them on. we don't get along anyway, not because of the lights, so I really don't care. he has one that points at my house. its pretty hard to not have a light shine at someone else's house unless it points straight down, especially depending on the type of light. |
you tried "please" and "thank you" already?

Had the same problem with a neighbor whose security light essentially illuminated our bedroom at night. During the day, stopped by, nicely, presented the issue as something my wife was more upset about....and offered to adjust it for them, leaving it as high as possible, just not shining over the fence.
The wife took me up on the offer. Was there in 3 minutes with a ladder, adjusted the light for her, problem solved, no hard feelings. |
