Went to look thinking it was a parts car......

A friend of a friend put the word out that his next door neighbor was unloading a 72 914. I need another car like a hole in the head but thought, I'll go look, might be some good parts. Husband is sick, they've owned it since the early 80's. Very nice lady. The guy bought a bunch of resto parts and took the trim off to paint it 10 years ago. 70k+ in original mileage. 1.7 liter car. Very original with the exception of the red paint instead of the original silver metallic which was done early in the cars life. I was thinking parts car before I saw it but it is in too nice of shape. I'll finish what he started over the next couple of years and then decide whether to keep my 73 or this one. Very little rust. She asked me to see it when it is done and maybe go for a ride. Hard to say no to that request and gives me some incentive to finish what he started.

Nice find! My vote would be for silver. The Formula V over in the corner looks interesting also!

I agree with Kach. Buff it out first but I still prefer red. Silver is too blah. Great find.

I'm not a fan of red cars but in something that small (former Miata owner here) red would be a good thing IMHO.

I see way more orange and red 914s than silver ones; I think, over here at least, it is more rare, so I vote SILVER. Great find, and good luck with the project.

Nice car, i'd leave it and enjoy it lest it become a project that stays tucked away longer than it already has.

Yeah, why do these things always happen to other people?? I like the red, but if you feel the need for a color change, I'm partial to Irish Green.

Well......both my 914 and my 356 started off Irish Green...(according to their C.O.A.)

But when I purchased them, the 914 was Silver......and the 356 was Red! I never thought I'd like a red sports car but it's just about perfect for the 356. And I really like the silver on the 914. So, I think silver on your 914 and when you get that 356...that one can be red! ![]() NICE pickup BTW!

Jerry - I think you are getting that illness some of us suffer. Don't you still have that '72 that I was looking at when you drove, back in about 2005 or so?

I can't believe I'm gonna say this- because usually I think red is pretentious and 1980'ish, but on a 914, red seems to work okay. Save yourself a lot of painting hassle, and it might be more visible. Just buff, and enjoy. I would feel safer surrounded in gigantic SUV world driving a small red 914 than a muted silver/grey color, but maybe that's just me.

Wow! Great find. This post illustrates why you should do such projects when young and healthy. "Husband is sick", so a project never completed. Fortunate you came along to see this to completion...

For ease of sale and value in ANYTHING collectible ORIGINAL (colour) is ALWAYS BEST. Otherwise it is an excuse you have to make.

Silver in that car is nice. If I am not mistaken the 914 is coming into it's own. If you pay attention and look things pop up.
