Well, my SUV is down to about $20k in value and dropping
In the next few years I'll easily lose $10k If I'm throwing that kind of money down the drain. I could think of worse ways than to be playing with a nice 928 I think I'll take steps towards buying it Maybe I'll even get in and back out of it for $5k when the day comes Optimistic but fun to think about while knowing I have a buffer

Make a list of all the NLA parts on the 928. Expect to buy a parts car hoping those "spare" parts will work when you need them. Sensors are what I hear are the worst....

Burn the fire.

The 924/944 guys are getting creative and using compatible parts from same era VWs, MBZs, Volvos, etc.

There is a 928 parts guy in Dallas that does a great job of finding good replacements for the NLA parts. Again, Rennlist 928 technical area for 928 info.

FWIW... Recently on one of the car rebuilding shows (Maybe Wheeler Dealer?) and auto electrician was hired in the fix a 928 with electrical issues.
He described the system in a 928 as as pretty basic and easy to fix. Which surprised me considering what I've read about these cars.

Where newer cars have computers the 928 did most of those functions with fuses and relays. Pretty amazing for the time and separates things out to track down problems. My Cayenne has control modules stuffed in different cubby holes all over the car where on the 928 almost everything goes to the fuse and relay panel.
Most electrical issues on the 928 can be remedied by locating and cleaning the grounds.

Racing seats and a roll cage can be easily removed and taken back to stock. Also, I'm sure you could find someone to buy those racing parts, further funding the car's needs.

One of the guys here at work has an S4 and its a never ending tale of misery. He has owned it since new but it tends to sit for long periods as he DDs a 996. Typically its the electrics that lets him down. If that does not frighten you then have at it.

Thanks
Ill have to look into what preventative maintenance can be done on electrical That keeps coming up again and again but never any specifics. More recently i have heard people talk about bad grounds that need to be cleaned upas Richard mentions Id be curious about electrical gremlin details.

Go post your questions on the 928 technical forum on rennlist.com.
Some of the best 928 mechanics are on there and happy to help. When you let a 928 sit and don't drive it, don't disconnect the battery, or put a trickle charger on it, the battery gets low. When the battery gets low it starts doing all kinds of weird stuff that makes no rhyme or reason. When one of the two 928s I had started doing weird electrical things. Usually dropping in a new battery fixed it. My current GTS was doing weird electrical stuff when i got it. First thing I did was remove the battery cut off switch the previous owner had installed. Fixed it. Evidently it was not letting enough power get to the car, or back to charge the battery.

The fuse/relay board is a piece of art.
Electrical is no daunting task. Very simple to trace once you get the correct wiring diagrams. It's just allot of circuits. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the mechanical difficulties. 928's have cis (k jet), and LH/L jet. Engine options range from non interference early 16 valve engines, to Euro spec 5.0l block with 16 valve heads, to the 32 valve later engines. 928's are fun as you can hot rod them with Porsche parts. at the same time you can do power train swaps with ls engines, and corvette torque tubes and trans.... As for that s4 with that roll bar. It's a standard. 75% of all 928's came with a slush box. So in itself it's rare, and at that price. I would buy it if I could get leave. Nla parts suck. I have spent years tracking down nla parts. It's a problem sometimes. At the same time allot of the parts cross reference to Volkswagen if you don't mind minor modifications. You have to be resourceful to own a 928 unless you don't mind throwing money at mechanics.

This one that has my attention is just an 81, manual tranny, two owner car (second owner had it the majority of its life)
Just coming out of climate controlled storage after many years resting

Have you tried asking about the car on rennlist? There are a couple of active guys in central Canada. Year before last they even hosted a 928 GTG there. They may know the car.
