Headed to Germany yet Higgins?
Just saw this on Fb
Boeing 747-430 was being prepared at Frankfurt International Airport's Gate A23 for a scheduled flight, LH760, to Delhi, India. Some repairs were carried out on the hydraulics of the left hand body gear while parked at the gate. During a test sequence the nose landing gear's ground lock pin fell out. This caused the nose landing gear to retract. The nose fell onto a push-back truck. The reason for the retraction of the nose gear was a malfunction of the lever mechanism within the safety bar in conjunction with the Ground Lock Pin. This left the GLP in the inserted position in an unlocked state. |

Ouch - I hate it when that happens... I hope the guy in the tug is o.k.
We've certainly fixed a few of these over the years, and working with Lufthansa in Frankfurt is always a good gig. I'm sure we will send a survey team and bid on it but, alas, I won't be on this one. I'm hanging up my spurs after 34 years and many, many laps of this fine globe. Two short weeks and I hand in my badge.

Absolutely retiring, at least for now. I may get bored in a couple of years and do some consulting or something. I've been thinking of helping out at a friend's gun shop, just for something to do. We'll see. It's all wide open for now.

Enjoy a well earned retirement Jeff.......I have a few friends with about 30 yrs in....I think the new labor contract makes getting out now pretty attractive I heard.

Thanks for the well wishes, guys. And yes, the new engineering contract, plus some early retirement incentives, definitely make it worthwhile.
So, to get that bird back on its feet, we remove the cockpit side windows and pass a beam through them. We have inserts that replace the windows to spread the load evenly in the frame - that's the kind of stuff I design. We would drop a sling to the ends of the beam, lift it with a boom crane, and place the nose on something with wheels so we could move it to somewhere we can work on it. From there, we simply put it up on its primary jack points, maybe put a cradle behind the nose wheel well, and go to work. We would likely leave the beam in and place it on jacks as well. I would be shooting the bottom of the airplane with a transit to ensure it stayed straight during the repair, adjusting jack loads as necessary. Then the guys simply unbolt, drill out rivets, etc. to remove the damaged parts and replace with new ones. Easy peasy...

How do you lift it? Easy...just get some fat people and maybe a few head of cattle to stand in the rear like they're all waiting for the bathroom at the same time. Stick a dolly under the front real quick and then tell them, "thanks for your time."
