LinkedIn, requests and a pretty face

I'm on LinkedIn. I am not terribly active on it, but i do have a group of friends and colleagues from current and past jobs. I accept the occasional request from head hunters or people in my industry that are indirectly known to me. I don't post or share things. I do "network" by occasionally messaging someone that I don't often see if it's an event of some sort.

I understand getting unsolicited requests from other folks in the same industry, especially if they are "linked" to people that I am linked to. I also understand head hunters. What seems a little weird to me are the women that have nothing to do with my industry or geographic area or head hunting or anything that seems remotely related trying to link. Especially since many/most that I run into have head shots or selfie style shots where they look fairly attractive or maybe even hot. Surely they aren't hookers looking for work. So what is the point? I guess they are just social media butterfly, attention whores that have filled up their facebook, instagram and snapchat friend lists and are now branching out?

Anyone got a better idea or have noticed the same?

I've had indian recruiters use fake white names and white picture profiles trying to solicit resumes from me. Fell for it, once until the "white" recruiter had such broken and poor english skills- then referred me to an 'indian' HR Person her "sister in law"- ya, right.

You can't trust any of 'em. Unless they are from a known company (primary source), I won't accept. Sick and tired of overseas recruiters trying to win the lottery. They land one deal it's a fortune for them.

I work in a VERY large company that has offices around the world. Hell, our companies IT arm is probably larger than many other companies. We have offices in India that are mostly for IT work (our company has follow the sun support for most things) so I'm not prejudiced against Indian folks or them providing IT support or anything. But I absolutely ignore any and all head hunter requests from anyone that seems like they may be from an offshore head hunter.

I've had some colleagues start dialog with some of those offshore head hunters before, and they have run into some unethical practices either by having their resumes appropriated for use by others (yeah, one guy ended up interviewing another guy who had the same experience, no, the EXACT same experience, dates, locations, jobs, etc...). Another had his resume submitted to several jobs without his knowledge which kept him from being able to submit through the head hunter that he was intentionally working with because once the resume is submitted by one person, that is the person that gets the credit regardless of who else tries to submit.

I've had a similar experience awhile ago on there - from a headhunter supposedly working for Tesla. She was very attractive and asked if I'd be interested in a technical position at their Northern Va location.

I replied that I knew Tesla did not have a 'service' facility there, only a showroom where apparently the 'sales' people are not permitted to discuss prices.

She replied that they are building a service facility there. I said "When it's finished and open - let me know

Never accept invitations from anyone you don't know on LinkedIn. Especially recruiters. It is the bottom of the barrel recruiters that aren't paying a recruiter membership at LinkedIn and want to build a network so they can search free. A decent recruiter doesn't have to be connected to you to solicit you for an opening.

There are also salespeople that want to connect and all sorts of riff raff. I made the mistake and accept some people I didn't personally know in the beginning. Had to un-friend them because they spammed the carp out of me and the feed.

Man, I'm doing something wrong. I'm not even getting spammed by attractive women.

LOLOL, I built up a network of over 650 people working at Uber, Tesla, Apple and a few other companies in the space of a month. I went from about 20 connections to over 650 pretty easily, without knowing anyone. I lost a lot of respect for Linkedin as a legit tool.

I've never figured out the angle. If I don't know the person I decline unless there's a well written reason for request along with it. Legit recruiters will take a few seconds to at least paste in a decent form letter.

I find it very weird. I've had a number of invitations to join linkedin by people I have never heard of, from different countries, and with zero connections. Maybe they get free sub's or something for introducing new people or something. I just ignore them.

I've gotten invites from people that I do know. I won't join because:

1) I'm happy with my current employer and my plan is to stay here until I retire.

2) I try to keep a low profile online and joining another social network runs counter to that.
