Tacoma brake question

My sons 2001 4 wheel drive Tacoma is having a strange issue. When applying the brakes the rear wheels feel like they are locking up then releasing then locking up again. I had the master cylinder replaced which solved most of this issue. It still "shutters" at slow speed stops. Mechanic thinks it's a rear end issue. The rear end had a complete rebuild about 4 years ago. No whining or noises that I can hear coming from the rear end. Since he had this truck in New York for four years I'm thinking maybe corroded rear drums? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

It only "SHUDDERS" with brakes... does it have ABS, don't know toyos??? (I have 'shutters' on my windows... ).

Very easy to check the drums...

I just did rear drums and shoes on 2001 4x4 Tacoma while freeing up the e-brake which produced a similar feel. There is a lot that can seize up back there. If you are confident in the rear end, I would replace the cylinders, shoes, drums pulling the e-brake and shoe mechanisms apart and thoroughly cleaning/renewing all the connecting parts. E-brake mechanisms rust up terribly and are connected to everything else.

Nice to know everything is new.

Shudders...English ain't my strong suit. I do have a feeling it might be about the e-brake. It pulls out maybe two inches only. Thanks for the suggestion.

It's the drums. Don't use the old shoes with the new drums you buy and don't buy the Chinese crap.

What Shaun said. It's common for parking brake pivot to rust up and not allow the shoes to return when you release the brake. The rear brakes are partially on all the time, they overheat, all hell breaks loose.

Also, check the diff vent.

replace it with a plastic one that won't corrode shut.

Just replaced the cables and pivot on my '06 Taco for similar reason.

These aren't that bad to do. It's all the springs that I hate when doing 911 e- brakes and drum in general. But the springs on a Tacoma are pretty forgiving.

Cleaned up and new shoes installed.

The rear drums were a PITA on both of my Tacomas. on my '07 I would have to replace the front rotors constantly due to warpage until I replaced them with Brembo rotors.

You can also do a rear differential breather mod if he's doing water crossings....

That's just because I use it as a body board at the beach.

I did my rear brakes for the first time at 200,oooKM

seriously though, check that diff vent. Weird sensation and by now it will be corroded.
The dealer cleans them as part of service but it never lasts, and can lead to blown seals.

Just replace it now with a plastic or stainless after market one
(you get shuddering, binding feeling and blows seals if its stuck)

Over the 22 years of owning my 911 I have never ever ever done a handbrake turn or even touched the e-brake except to park. At one of the autocrosses long ago one of the members was just happy doing e-brake turns. One day he mentioned his "parking" brake did not work very well anymore. I went over to help him do his replacement of the shoes. Not a fun project. He decided he would never do an e-brake turn again. I laughed and agreed.
