Moving is kicking my A$$!
The big move starts tomorrow morning. A two day move, only about 2 miles. I've been packing, throwing out schit, giving away schit for three months. Its never ending. I open a drawer/cabinet, and its like OMG, more Schit!

I've lost count at how many moves I've done over the years...
Just think once it's done, it's done! Have a beer and put your feet up.

Hugh, I feel your pain.
Due to work and travel commitments the family and I have been living a two-house life for some time now. Changed jobs, and now looking at consolidating into one location. If you think moving from one house to another is tough though, consider consolidating two houses into a third in the process. The only benefit here is that I can do it quite leisurely as I am keeping all the properties.

We aren't getting any younger, and picking up/carrying heavy items will wear you out quickly, plus the mental stress of leaving the homestead.
I have been at my farm for 22 years now, and can't imagine the paring down we would need to do to make a move managable....good luck, and work smart, not hard. |

I frequently tell my wife that if we ever move again, she's either hiring a moving company or we are having one hell of a garage sale. Moving sucks.

Best decision I ever made. |

i think short moves are worse than long moves.
short moves people don't pack things up because its "just down the road" the key to making a move easy is put EVERYTHING in a box that will fit. when pro movers moved us they would just grab something, wrap it in paper and then into a box. then its just a matter of moving the boxes, which pack much better in a truck that individual items. we did a 15 miles move about 10yrs ago,. your right, you never realize how much junk you have until you move. the garage was the worse. very large tool boxes and not on wheels. I have 2 of the tall vidmar boxes, one half as high and then another small one,. I helped a friend do short move one time. drove me NUTS. NOTHING was packed. anything they packed they packed it the day of the move. other than that it was never ending trips out to the truck with one or 2 items at a time.

I can't imagine ever moving again.
If so, I'd pack on my own what I consider to be precious to me and pay a company to do the rest. The End.

3 years ago we downsized. We went from a 2000sqft house with 2 car garage and attic over the garage and house to a 1250sqft apt with 2 large closets. After 8 months or so, we then downsized to an 850sqft apt with 2 closets, then another 8 months later, we moved to a different 850sqft apt with 1 small closet. We have 2 storage units, but now after 3 years, we are preparing to go get rid of enough stuff to get down to only 1 storage unit.
We packed ourselves and then paid a company to get the boxes and furniture, put them in a truck and then get them from the truck into the new apt. It was still a ton of work and we were beat afterward. We were only in the house for about 20 years and had been in apts or townhouses before that. I assume for most folks that have been in homes longer or in larger homes, it would be more difficult. Shoot, just moving from one unit to another in the same apt complex on the same floor is a pain. Yeah, moving REALLY sucks. If you pay someone else to do it, then you've got to worry about breakage too.

I moved cross-country twice in two years. (After moving three years before that.) It really cut down on the crap.

We moved after 25 years in our previous house.
Had to move from House in CT to a 1 Bedroom apartment for 3 months Had 5 car garage plus basement Gave away lots of stuff and threw out stuff. We packed most of the stuff. But had movers move everything. Once the house was ready in NC we moved from CT apartment to NC Also had to move 5 cars was a logistical nightmare but we got all to work We put stuff in storage with the Van Line moving company but all my Garage stuff went to self storage. But I had Local movers do the self storage load and unload. The biggest pain was moving the cars and my lift. The lift went to a friends house in NJ. I look back now and it was just about a year ago we moved. Get Local help to carry lift and move stuff it is cheaper then you think to hire a couple of guys for 4-6 hours. Good luck you will make it even though it seems over whelming at times. Just reach out for help I feel your pain

We have moved 10 times in 15 years. Get some of that.
Been in the same house for 3 years now and I can see the stuff multiplying. There is not another move on the horizon for the foreseeable future, if there is we are screwed. .

I grew up in the Air Force. Dad was an pilot in the Air Force. We moved all the time. Dad said 4 moves is about equal to a house fire. The crap tends to go away fast. I have few thing from my childhood except the photos. Those were kept but the toys and stuff are long gone.
