Congratulations Dan!
It sounds like you've earned it with your distinguished career so enjoy it BUT make the most of it too....or so I'm told! I'm about three years away from the big R myself. My wife and I decided that July 1/2020 would be a great time to do it so hopefully that will come to fruition....2020 fits in quite well with my line of work too....Optometrist here! ![]() If you don't mind me asking, what steps did you take in deciding that today was THE day? Long time planning or "to hell with this, I'm DONE today!"? ![]() Cheers!

I'm 7 yrs in and we are loving this retired gig. It was so "underrated". You'll see. Take it slow and easy and relearn how to manage your own time and enjoy the moment.
As for staying in Cali, it is your home and where your friends are since you were 9. Take some time to explore areas of interest that you might think you want to retire to, but what's the hurry, you're retired. Your next adventure is here. I hope you enjoy every moment of it Dan. Best to you, Dan T

Hugh is moving away. His wife is way smarter than any of us are, so that is probably the way to go. He has kids to move closer to though.
Congratulations on the whole life of leisure thing.

Congrats, I've been retired for over 2 years. I don't miss working. Now I do what I want when I want. Now i take road trips or take small trips.
Just remember every day is Saturday.

Congrats. We're hoping to be on a 5 year plan. My wife just turned 60, she robbed the cradle, I just turned 54 :-) I'm looking at Airstreams on line when I'm bored.

Good point. When every day is Saturday, we learned to stay home on weekends and do our playing when most are working. The art of crowd avoidance is a good thing to learn. When there is less crowd, restaurants give better service, store clerks are more helpful, etc.

Well, I certainly did not expect this kind of response.
Thanks everyone. The sendoff was low key. I like it that way. The past ten years really retarded my social life and now I need to resurrect it. As for staying in California; I am undecided. I love it here, but the uncertainty of the policies is cause for concern. The past has impacted me in many ways and I hope that is not the case in the future (?????) but it is hard to beat this place. Oh, and my tomatoes (for sauce), peppers (you name the type), horse radish and basil (I make a mean pesto) are at record yields this year. I am giving two thirds of the basil away. I am also the old guy on the block now, that fixes all the kids bikes and other stuff. I get to help my neighbors who have helped me so much in the past and it is all good. Our neighborhood, as a kid had Mr. Bledsoe. I get to payback his great karma. But day by day. I am healthy and come from a long lived group so here we go, the next adventure.

One of the best things about retirement is not having to wake up to an alarm clock every morning...

Yeah, only when it is so you can get an early start on some fun thing you want to do! Or you have a yellow lab.

Congratulations. I also retired on Friday, and am so excited to have more time! My plan is to start off restoring a couple of old cars.

Congrats.
I was suppose to retire on the 4 of July but my replacement turn out to be a "dud" and was terminated... I'm now on 3 days week (from 4 days for the last year) probably for the next 4 months.
