I would say avoid the drugs. If you have time you can go as a guest to a local Toastmasters Club. It costs nothing for the first couple of visits.

My Dad said two things relating to this: Only you know what you're going to say - they don't - therein is where you have the power over the audience. Don't forget to breathe and pace your delivery, pausing ( pregnant ) to emphasize a point or at least pretend to.

While it is extremely calming without reducing mental faculties I don't recommend it because if you are not used to it you will walk around like you are slightly intoxicated.

Lots of advice out there but I would practice until you know it cold and keep a bottle of water handy. Your throat can get dry and it will help you pause.

Slows your pulse rate. Biofeedback makes you FEEL calm. It absolutely works, but it can drop your BP. Consult your doctor. Try a test dose before the speaking event.

If you want to be calm, confident and ready, then PREPARE.

Nothing calms the nerves more than knowing that you did the work and are the **** and have it down pat.

Start early. Days, over a week. Get loose. Make some jokes. Have fun with it. I know there are all ranges of people but even the worst neurotic mess can practice into a fairly polished presentation.

Toastmasters may be something to look at as well. People rave about it.

A microcasette recorder with you recording yourself explaining your story (you know they'll ask you) along with answers for common interview questions. Go till smooth and transparent.

True performance anxiety has nothing at all to do with being well prepared for a presentation. NOTHING.

It is an anxiety attack. It occurs regardless of preparation. It is very treatable, however. Cognitive-behavioral conditioning is very effective and medications like Inderol serve as valuable adjuncts. The medications are rarely required long term.
