Personal experience, never met an Akita I liked or trusted.

Well one, barely.

Others will chime in that I'm nuts and that may be the case as my sample size is less than 10 so take it for what it's worth which may not be much.

Is this your first pet as an adult?

Because puppies are Satan. After the cute wears off you will come to hate it. Five years later you will fall in love again and realize it's the best dog ever.

Or you could just spare yourself the crap and adopt an older well adujusted dog.

Yup, bred as a fight dog - scary.

Border Terriers are great. But what ever you choose, do all the puppy/dog school stuff to help you understand the dog. It makes for a happy relationship.

Probably a mix to avoid if you are not able to devote considerable time to perpetual training.

Agreed. Get a dog with balanced genetics. Pound mutts are pretty good. Take your time and figure out what works for you. I have a soft spot for lab retriever types.

Go pick up a dog from the local pound.
Beau thinks it's a great idea.

Rex would too! (RIP - 11/28/2014)

When picking up a dog from the pound, look for a mild mannered smaller breed that hasn't been bred for fighting ...IE pitbull, staffordshire terrier, Akita. These dogs are very good with one person, but the issue comes from introducing other dogs or people. When given the choice of fight, or flight, they will fight every time regardless of who, or what it is.

Nothing beats a family dog like a retriever, or lab, they are loyal, friendly, and big enough to be intimidating to strangers, but not dangerous.

"Beau"? Must be a Georgia thing...or a Gwinnett County thing, even.

Here's MY "Beau"...he was literally born in a barn. DNA test indicates he's a Sheltie, Chow Chow (Blue spots on his tongue) and Vizsla...

As a previous dog owner of single and multiple dogs for 40 years, I can honestly advise you; fight the urge. If you cannot resist, any kind of Lab or Lab mix is a great family dog to rescue.

Beau and his sister Sasha were already named when we fostered them for about a month. We still had 14 yr old Rex (Sheppard mix) and two puppies were definitely 1 puppy too many! My wife chose to keep Beau over Sasha based on his "personality." Sasha ended up being adopted by another family.

We also had the option of choosing between Beau and his sister. My step-daughter's classmate was taking riding lessons. The instructor found mom and her 6 pups (1 male, 5 females) in her barn around New Years, 2016. By the time I entered their saga, only Beau and one sister were still available. I chose Beau, I was hooked the moment I saw him.

Top pic is Beau at 6 weeks old. Bottom is this past May..17 months old.

Those huskita's look like a good dog. The only warning I found was that it is not a good first dog.

Personally like Goldens.

I love dogs...

But need a lot of attention, as in taking them for walks every day rain or shine, picking up poop daily, and grooming.

If you are okay with all of that go for it.

A friend had an akita that was good with him but was very aggressive with everyone else.

Dunno about Husky's but they have to be about the most beautiful dogs on the planet.

When we retire and have the time we are thinking of getting a dog... but there is a battle between she want a little dog and I want a medium size herding dog.

My female border collie has been one of the easiest dogs to have around.
I would say that she qualifies as a small dog as she only weighs 38 pounds.

My neighbor has had two Akitas. Neither lived long or were very healthy animals.
They were both pretty good with me but others in the neighbourhood didn't trust them. Tough dog for a first time owner.

My first Golden spoiled the heck out of me. She was so smart and trainable she was like those services dogs for the blind. Stayed right at my side, did anything I asked and only had to show her something new once. She also wouldn't do anything unless I said it was okay. People could even try to give her attention, toys, or even food and she would ignore them until I said it was okay.

I could point to place in the yard (or anywhere) and tell her to "Do your stuff." She would poop and I could immediately pick it up in a bag and throw it in the trash.

Every morning right after the daily paper was delivered she would wake me up to let her out. She would go to the house across the street, get the paper out of their driveway and put it on their front porch. She did the two houses down the block then cross the street moving the papers from the driveway to their front porch until she go back home and brought my paper in.

If I didn't feel like going for a walk I could just tell her to go for a walk. She would walk around the block staying next to the curb, and wouldn't be distracted. If a car came she would get out of the street and sit on the grass close to the curb until the car passed. Then she would resume her walk. From where my house was situated I would watch her about 3/4 of the way around the block.

My brother with MS moved in and he didn't like dogs. He wouldn't allow her in his bedroom. She would sit just out side the door and watch him. If he had any problems she would come and get me an take me to his room. Most of the time it was before he even had a chance to yell for help. Every once in a while snacking on peanuts he would "accidentally" drop one. He would say "oh well okay" She would run in grab the peanut and run back out, then eat it.

After she passed I only lasted a week before I had to get another puppy.
