Porsche to F1?!?

They have confirmed "interest" in F1.

"Porsche's financial chief has confirmed that the Stuttgart manufacturer is seriously considering a return to Formula 1 as an engine supplier under the proposed 2021 regulations."

Porsche ‘encouraged’ after Monza meeting
Date published: September 5 2017

Porsche's financial boss Lutz Meschke has said they are "encouraged" by the ongoing engine discussions for 2021 and beyond, and are open to joining Formula 1.

Porsche are leaving the LMP1 class of the World Endurance Championship at the end of the season and are preparing to join the fast-growing Formula E series in 2019, but are seriously considering entering Formula 1 as a engine supplier as opposed to a full works team.

Regular meetings about engine regulations have taken place between F1 bosses, FIA and numerous potentially interested new parties.

And Porsche met again with F1 chiefs at the Italian Grand Prix last weekend, with Meschke hopeful that a path to Formula 1 is becoming clearer.

"F1 could be one of the right places," Meschke told Motorsport.com.

"As you know Formula E is very important for us now, and F1 is always a good topic to think about. And I think we are in quite good discussions regarding the new engine."

A change to simpler twin-turbo V6 engines is the ultimate objective, and that it is what it would take for Porsche to continue to be interested in Formula 1.

"Absolutely," Meschke added. "We have to cut costs in F1, and it's a good way to reach this target."

It's all over the motorsport sites as a rumor, but I struggle with how that makes sense.... Porsche quit WEC (Le Mans style prototypes) because it cost $200 Mil a year. I can see them making an F1 engine, using their WEC know-how on KERS, and sell it and possibly break even or not spend too much in the end.

But Buying Red Bull ? That's gotta cost 2-3x the amount they were putting in WEC, plus the engine budget (which they cannot charge for if they own the team). All that to fight the might of MErcedes and Ferrari and develop a chassis too? I just don't get how they could afford this. VW as a group, maybe (if they were not embroiled in diesel scandal & making payments), but Porsche ? If I were them I'd stick with an engine, just that part is not that easy, ask Honda !

What he said, Porsche is all about making money (nothing wrong with a company wanting to make money) so why would they drop the huge chunk of change for a F1 team? Plus they are a mainstream auto company and don't need the street cred of a racing team. Bring on the Porsche Mini Van and pickup truck!

Who knows what they'll do?

Porsche says it’s still not interested in Formula One | Autoweek
Referring to the three-year decision to enter Le Mans in 2014 rather than another top category like F1, he told DPA news agency, "We have not looked back once and we are perfectly happy.

"We think LMP1 is the future," Muller said, adding that in contrast, F1 appears to be "in more and more difficulty.”

“Formula One has never been an issue for us and it won’t be,” head of development Wolfgang Hatz told Auto Motor und Sport.

“Le Mans is a more attractive environment. There are more and more competitors and we learn more.”

A great idea! Porsche will have a long way to go to compete with MB. At 1000 BhP, 1.9L, V6 with a rev at 18K is a very tough beast to beat. They also have a very smart driver.

The things that can be discovered as Porsche looks to compete in F1 exciting for commercial applications. This will propel them into some serious hybrid work, lower emissions, better fuel economy. All good things ahead!

Yes to all of that, for a an engine... And they're rumored to be working on a lot of single-cylinder simulations until the engine specs are firmed up in the rules...

But again, why bother buying a team for $$$mil and then paying more $$$Mil to run it, when all you need to do is find one that'll want your engine? There's lots of poor teams that'll take a free engine if it comes to that, and if it's any good and reliable, the top teams (outside of Merc/ferrari obviously) will come knocking fast... I can see McLaren-Porsche returning as a good combo by the time Porsche is ready (They're ditching Honda and signing up with Renault but it's likely temporary, unless Renault comes good - which is not farfetched as they dominated F1 for many years as a motorist)

If this is true, it could setup the perfect stage for Porsche takeover...
