Classics/Clunkers

We all know that most car makers have made cars that are now sought after collectables. But these same makers also made cars nobody wanted. the list could be a long one. In Chevy, 1967 427 Vette..or Vega. Porsche, 1973 RS or 924.

So, not having really followed the Ferrari thing, did they ever make a similar POC car?

Good 924's are going for money around here..
And why wouldn't they, good Mk1 GTI Golf's go for similar money and are boring FWD and looks compared to a 924..

150000 924's got sold..
And another 165322 944's of various versions.

That's more then the G series 911

So to say nobody wanted them bit silly.. If anything Porsche kept from going out of business through 924 and 944 sales.
Why would they sell that many of them if nobody wanted them???

I have a Cayman now, but i'de still get a 924 if the right one came along for the right price.. they are fun cars.

I get the comparisons.

Chevy
427 vette to Vega

Ford
GT40 to Bullit

Although I think the Porsche 924 reference is unfair, I still like them and wouldn't hesitate to own another.

Every non desirable car has it's following, I guess. Didn't like the first 924 I saw, still don't like 'em.

Your dig on the Bullitt Mustang? Hmmm, priced a good Bullitt replica '68 fastback lately? And even though I don't consider my '09 Bullitt Mustang a future collectable, I worry not a bit about it, because I won't live long enough to see if it becomes one.

However, they seem to have a higher demand and value retention than the same year Mustang GT's. I paid $30,075 for mine new. Since it's odo reads 26,000 I figure I could get $20-21K easily. It's no thrill ride, but it gets me to my favorite pool hall & back home.

Here you go if you want a nice one...

There are times that certain Ferrari's went down to the value of a normalish car, but speculators trying to put cash some where other than the stock market will take those out of circulation, lowering supply, increasing buy price down the road.

Also some of the lesser valued Ferrari's still have epic Ferrari engines, for building custom cars using the less valued Ferrari's engine as base. This has also driven down supply from cars getting cut up.

A running, rust-free Vega might be as rare as an unmolested 427 'Vette.

And what is the point of this scholarly thread? That car companies made different models from economy cars to high performance models?

People did not buy many hemi 'Cuda convertibles in 1970 for the same reason that not many people buy Hellcat Challengers or ZR-1 Camaros marked-up $20k over sticker today. They are an odd anomaly on the showroom floor that are fun to look at for a minute but almost no one actually wants to own, at least not if they have to pay for it. They are one-trick ponies that don't serve people's transportation needs.

And therefore become rare, collectible cars later.

Much rarer. There are more "authentic" big block 'vettes around now than they ever built.

a clean Vega Wagon or the Pontiac version would be a good one to buy.

Vega, the car you can hear rust on the showroom floor.
