We get the weirdest bugs. What is this caterpillar?

And, our dog who normally eats anything that moves looked at it, sniffed it, looked at it again and let it be.

We call them mohawk caterpillars but technically they are white marked tussock moth caterpillars (orgyia leucostigma).

We get these.

Recent transplant was following one around her yard filming it.

Thought it was some sort of beetle.

It's a Velvet Ant which is not really an ant, it's a ground wasp.

Also known as "cow killer" and apparently has the 3rd most painful sting on the planet.

Luckily it scurried away before she could pick it up.

There was one of these outside at work a couple years ago. I'm guilty of doing the same thing. No way I was touching it, though. No idea what it was but I know enough that orange = bad idea.

Didn't know they came this far north.

We used to call the caterpillar in the first pic a "pack saddle". Don't touch it - they sting like crazy. BTDT

I saw these for the first time in Nova Scotia in mid August.

I was really impressed by how ornate the were. Not surprised to see them in this post. Wish hadn't been too lazy to get out my proper camera and take some good pics.

Yesterday found a dead moth in the swimming pool skimmer. Unusual bug. White with black circles on its wings. Very pretty. Carefully removed the dead body and took it inside to show folks. Lady of the house is out for a few days so I put the carcass on a shelf to show her when she gets back. This morning it was gone. Fan blow it off? No. Ferrets get it? No... It was playing possum. Now there's a Giant Leopard Moth loose in the house.

ETA: The Velvet Ant is actually a ground-dwelling wingless wasp. It packs one hell of a sting. Old folks called them Horse Killers.

They do have a really painful sting. I picked one up because I thought it looked so cool. Bad decision!
