Need input on video editing software for GoPro-> YouTube/Instagram for MTB/various sh

I'm late to the game, as usual.

Just picked up some Hero 5 Blacks and I've got a gimbal arriving Friday. I ride mtb all over the country, kayak, travel, explore and seem to find myself in the middle of a lot of situations worth capturing and sharing.

What's the best software to create good media? I'm Windows based.

I should mention that I work in an industry with folks who do this for a living. I'd ask them but you guys are cheaper and probably know what I'm really looking for.

I've got a pile of decent gear, heading to ride some amazing trails in a few days (including an IMBA EPIC), I think I can get some good footage, just need help with how to turn it into a finished product

Doesn't GoPro have a software-suite for their products? I think so. My son looked for the same thing. He ended up with Camtasia.

The newest software for the hero 5 requires a 64 bit computer, mine's 32 bit, so that sucks. I'm stuck with the older software version which means no GPS overlays since only the newest software package has that feature.
Higher res recordings require a lot of computing power, a standard run of the mill computer is not going to cut it.

If there are any userfriendly (free) software programs out there, I'm interested.

Oh yeah, GoPro needs to implement a simple timestamp function in their cameras.
They refuse to give that to their customers, which is an epic fail and the reason why I will not be buying any thing from them until they do.

Apps for your phone can do quite a bit now

The new go pros let your phone monitor the action, upload edit etc

Not everything you need but it’s a start

If you were local I have one I would give you just to get it out of my hair. The only caveat is it only has 32Gb of RAM

GoPro is not much more than a marketing company at this point - there are cameras out out as good and better for a fraction of the price. What did it for me is the app update that won't let you connect to your camera unless you connect to the GoPro data collection servers first; this forced connection doesn't provide any consumer functionality whatsoever, it's purely a data suck.

Microsoft gave away Movie Maker for years. They have done a great job of removing it and making it not work at all on current computers. I have to wonder why they would deliberately kill a decent free program. In the end, if you want a fairly easy to use movie maker, choke up the $99 per year for the Abode Premier Elements. It works. If you want more power, go for Premier Pro.

I merge videos in GoPro Studio software (as the GoPro only records like 17 minutes per video or something then makes another file. Then I use a cheap freeware editor to clip the video segments I want.

Youtube's built in editor is actually pretty good for basic editing, if you are interested in the videos only being on Youtube and not having an actual edited file.

Unfortunately GoPro has done away with Studio and now has a program and app called Quik. Seems decent enough but seems to be lacking some features I think I want such as ability to control composition and overlay of multiple audio tracks.

GPS on the Hero 5 sounds awesome but I've had no luck with it on the trail so far, thinking tree cover inhibits a good signal...

I've got the Windows Movie whatever on my laptop (which is not a built up gaming laptop but it is built up and I can run things like Vectorworks without issue)
I'll play around with it later today

I broke down and purchased Adobe Premiere Pro last night. It is way more than I need but their AMAZING tutorials are really what sold me.

What did Adobe Premiere Pro cost you?
I bought a copy of Sony Vegas for like $30 and it does basic stuff like editing and cropping.

Premiere is excellent, but is a bit of a resource hog compared to FCP. Not really an issue on a capable desktop, but if you do all of your editing on battery power (laptop), then it may be an issue. Though, FCP being Mac only would be a non-starter for me, personally.

Also, isn't the Pro version of Premiere a monthly subscription-only based program now? As in, stop paying and it stops working? If that's the case, you might consider looking at Premiere Elements. Just like PS Elements, it does 90% of what the "full" program does, and is more than enough for most folks who don't need/use it professionally. It's also a one-time purchase, without any "subscription" requirement, and is of course cheaper. I know you said you already purchased Pro, but if you happen to still be in the "trial" (refund) period, then you might take a look at Elements and see if you would really need/miss the few features that Pro gives you.

Although normally I'd say to use Premiere Pro CC in this case I would recommend getting Black Magic's free version of Resolve. It is a state of the art editor and color correction suite that will serve you quite well. Don't bother with Sony Vegas as it's a dead product.

For all those trying to steer him to FCP, he is Windows based!!! FCP is mac only.

Thanks for the input guys! I haven't had much time to play around with PPro but I'm finding it to fit my style of thinking perfectly

I threw this together super quickly just to force myself to work with my own footage

Also have been enjoying the mobile apps, especially when playing with just photos. For whatever reason I started an Instagram account and have been having fun sharing my travels/adventures and random bits of my life.
Can't wait to learn more of this software
