Swipe up to your control panel, Turn off the antenna any time you are away from a predefined wifi or you want to turn on wifi. Eats battery searching for a new wifi when you are not connected to one.

Ya ya...Just because your phone is hands free. My bro uses his iPhone hands free, he also reads and replies to texts and emails with siri and is still a dangerously distracted driver.

As a matter of fact he drove to lunch today and tried to have Siri call his wife...while he was driving...HER phone was on do not distrurb and sent and text telling him she would call after she reached her destination! So I really like the do not disturb while driving feature.

Now if they would just have a setting to enable that feature while I was using the phone to make a voice call!!!! or at least mute and vibrate instead of playing my ringtones while I am on the phone.

I am surprised the government is not stepping in here? There has to be a large increase in fender benders, rear endings etc., no? Are driving assist systems making up for it?

Worst are traffic lights. Everyone gets on their phone and then sleeps through the green. I have been at left arrows where the average per phase is 5 cars (!).

While that’s annoying I will offer counterpoint: Think back to the early days of mobile phones. One of the primary reasons to get one was to maximize one’s productivity particularly while sitting in traffic which up until that point had been completely wasted time.

It really does not take much attention or brainpower to successfully or safely operate a motor vehicle that essentially parked or is just crawling along inches at a time, constantly following somebody else’s bumper in urban gridlock or on an overcrowded freeway. Mobile phones realize their maximum value in such situations, turning worthless, wasted, frustrating time into something that can actually be somewhat productive.

That said, people have abused and misused the technology. I see people blasting away in fast-moving, busy traffic or at other “higher mental workload” times distracted on their pocket rectangles. Not good, especially with the ever-increasing number of testosterone-oozing, aggro-ed, over-aggressive douches out there thrown into the mix.

The real solution to all this is self-driving cars which will allow people to comfortably ride along and use their travel time productively while simultaneously making the entire system better and safer for all by eliminating unpredictability and deviations in vehicle speed. As much as I like being in control of my own vehicle and the experience of driving, it has become a chore due to too many people and too many rules, lights, stop signs everywhere, etc. It’s just not all that fun anymore - usually. Trying to “dumb it down” and transform it into a completely worthless and frustrating expenditure of time is not something that’s going to offer a lot of appeal.

Yes, I agree that distracted driving is a real problem but until the system doesn’t make driving such a wasted expenditure of time, I don’t see the problem going away.

For one I do not need a “DND while driving” feature. I already have one - my decision to not pick up the device during “high workload” times while driving when I know my attention really does need to be on what’s going on outside. If I space out at a light and don’t catch it turning green, there’s always a helpful fellow motorist that will remind me with an incessant horn-blast about three milliseconds after the light changes, so I’m not too worried about that aspect either...

Apparently many are not aware or don't care to follow the "new" law in CA that the phone needs to be mounted. I still see many holding the phone texting or up to their ear. The automotive-phone laws in CA appear to be ineffective.

Not as effective as they need to be. About 2 months ago I was riding out to Hawthorne behind a CHP. We were moving along at a light pace splitting the carpool lane. CHP looked over and the guy in the car to his right was texting & driving in slow traffic. CHP pulled him over. That was a treat to see.

The DND feature can be turned on or off which makes it a choice. No different than making the choice to pick up and use the phone when you shouldn't be. There would be no way to make legislature to make it automatic as there are way too many parameters. It is triggered by speed as the phone assumes you're driving if it sees certain parameters. So what if you're on a bus or a train, or riding in the back seat of a carpool or such..?
It will always be a choice and be that will be unfortunate for some.

right. every thread like this brings out the person that is perfect and puts the phone in the truck, hands at 2 and 10..seat adjusted..coffee? hell no!! dangerously hot liquid while driving? NO!!

similar to a "do you have a TV?" thread

i like the feature. my contractors hate it. they cant get a hold of me.
