saw one of those Chebbies stuffed in a 9-one-one at Texas World Speedway last month at DE.......
Looked like it belonged there (it was done that well). Went back and looked again, just to make sure I wasn't looking at my 928...... YEP, a 9-one-one. ran like a monster....the rest of the car looked like s***. Owner didn't care what anyone said about it.....go figure. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/cut.gif Lets see.....If I put a Chebbie V-8 in the back of my 928, will that give me a split V-16? Nah, that's totally weird----- http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/shake.gif regards---rhjames http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/pc2.gif http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173680882.jpg |

Oh yeah, 3.5 lateral g's isn't possible cause "the weight is up to high"... Nothing against the flat 6 design, i've got a 964. But give credit where it's deserved. Does porsche win EVERY race they're in because of their "superior design". No. Come on. |
bump... (for Rarly8)

I built this a fuel injected 350 crate motor and a 930 transmission. This car runs well and has taken trips over 3,000 miles. It faired better than I on the long trips. I may trade her in for a nice 928 one day... |
I don't follow F1 but don't they run v10's ?
Isn't half of the flat 6 engine above the centerline of the crank? what about the fuel injection, dist, airbox, fan, shroud, alternator aren't they above the crank? Is the oil tank above the crank? What does all that stuff weigh? I am not knocking the flat 6 just curious about the fact the V8 weight is about 50 more than the N/A flat-6 when equipped with aluminum heads and manifold and it weighs less than a 930 engine about the same amount. If someone wanted to use an aluminum block you would loose another 100 lbs. Why didn't Porsche put a flat 6 in the 924, 944, 928 pepper wagon, etc? I am just having fun here. The flat 6 is a great engine but there are others too but maybe not just in 911s. |
Boxer Porsche engine is a throwback to the original Volkswagen concept, pre WWII. The 924 was originally built to have an other than Porsche nametag, but VW backed out and Porsche grabbed it as an entry type vehicle....yeh...with all 115 HP. The engine was a basic Audi block used in trucks. The 944 simply widened the fenders, upgraded the 924 suspension and designed a bigger in line 4 that is a compilation of just about every engineering error imaginable. I have worked on enough of them. When everything works, it works well, but so many things are there to go wrong. At least the flat six uses chains for the timing and not a cloth belt. Being a rather large four, there are harmonic problems so a balance belt/shaft system was required, which other designs (in line 5, V6) could have lived with. Both the 924 and the 944 engine left little room for improvement except turbocharging which worked, but introduced its own unique set of problems. The 944 begs to have a "better" (read one with more potential) powerplant. There is little in the way of aftermarket improvements available for the original. I would guess that a 3.8 liter V6 would fill the bill as a good all-round replacement, especially one that is popular with tons of after market stuff available. The boxer design engine is too wide to go in a 924/944 because of the steering system.

Anyone have the weight differance for a LS1/2/7 swap? The blocks are all aluminum, as with the heads.
Stock with exhaust weights: 964/993 3.6= 535 lbs LS1 = 459 LS2 = 438 This isn't completely accurate for an entire swap since the whole oiling system (sump, lines, cooler, filter/plumbing ect) is removed in this system and with 11+ quarts of oil circulating around...its a lot of weight, almost enough to offset the entire weight of the front mounted aluminum rad, so what you get is about 100 lbs off the rear end depending on the exhuast system used with a ls2. Not to bad. Bone stock with free flow intake and exhaust the ls2 puts down 472 hp at the crank and is reliable and lighter than any turbo motor porsche's produced. |
My 2001 LS1 with ported/polished stock heads, cam, long headers put down 447 horsepower at the rear wheels.
A good friend built a LS2 with a stroker crank and dynoed 580hp at the crank, naturally aspirated. Great motors: lightweight, reliable, and cheap. |
