Nice bench vice for sale on Amazon

Yost 750-DI

It's not American made, and it's not going to take a sledgehammer like a 50 year old American vice, but I've used mine for 2 years and really like it. Rotating jaws, 60K tensile strength iron, removable jaws, etc. BIG. REALLY BIG.

I got mine on special for $160 and that was $40 off, so $125 on Amazon's deal of the day is super cheap.

$125? Yikes. Also scrounge your local Craigslist, Salvation Army, Kiwanis, and other resale thrift stores.
Sometimes there are some real bargains.

I bought a 5" craftsman USA made vise on ebay for 105$ shipped a few months ago. I think it is from maybe the mid 90s, perhaps a tad earlier. The bizzare thing is it was in absolutely mint condition, I am pretty sure it was never even mounted. I wonder if people come across new old stock inventories or if it just sat in gramps garage for a long time and he nver got around to installing it.

The best part was it was shipped in a flat rate priority box which was pretty mangled by the time it got to me. My poor mail man/lady.

The Record (made in China now) that Home Depot sells now is nearly identical and similar money.

I moved with my old american real iron bench vice.

As we were in a rental for 7 months while the house was being built a lot of our stuff was in a storage unit including all my tool chests.

Took some time to organize my garage in the new house and one day realized, where the f is my vice?

Me thinks one of the movers may have taken a shine to it.

That's a nice general purpose vise.

At home I use a Brownell's Multi-Vise. It's about twice the price but it's very functional especially with the optional jaws.

BTW my SIL has a much heavier-duty vise at his race car shop.

Read my mind, for something as rough duty as a vice I would opt for the HF option.
YMMV

I've wanted one of these for years and they're not that expensive 2nd hand on Ebay but the shipping from the US is about $300. (Starrett don't make these anymore)

Also shopping for a Starrett jewlers vice. IMO the best Hand Vice made. If your unscrew the handle you can mount them in a bench block. Perfect for smaller work.

The Yost 750-DI that I mentioned in the first link is twice the price of those others because:
5 inch jaw opening
All 3 sets of jaws are removable/replaceable, and made from machined steel instead of molded iron
The swivel mechanism has locking teeth, so when you lock it down it will NOT rotate on you, unlike the cheaper ones that just use friction
The rotating jaws have a pin and lock system for positive detents, I don't think the cheaper ones have that
The vise is made of 60K tensile strength ductile iron, vs 25k-30k strength grey iron.

It also weighs about 20 pounds more...

I wouldn't spend $200 for it, but when it was $125...

Don't have 'em anymore, but old vices are great!

Very interesting. I really like the adjustable dove tail rails. They don't make them like that anymore.

I went with a Heuer vise from Germany. It was about $130 delivered.

If you're going to buy a chinese vise why not just go to Harbor Freight?

Reminds me when I moved out of an apartment in college. Took me a year to remember I forgot to move a love seat I bought at a yard sale for $10! It was a nice one too! Well, I guess if it was really nice I would have remembered it. Makes me wonder what else I will remember what I forgot

Yost makes good a good vice. Some of the other rotating vices have been known to fail.

High Strenth Design

''The 750-DI made from 60,000 PSI ductile iron, but that is not the only design change that makes it stronger than other rotating vises on the market. The main screw and nut has been increased in size to produce larger clamping forces. The nut has been reinforced to reduce stress points. The main bar has been flared to increase strength in critical areas. ''
