Did you hear the news? Singer has announced details about offering their encompassing talents to undertake a performance research study with Williams Advanced Engineering, which is part of the Williams Grand Prix Engineering Group. Here is their post from Instagram:

Another view. Exciting but at what cost? (If you have to ask...)

Really cool, gonna be mega bucks but so is everything Singer does. It will sell like crazy.

Now when they can get it to the HP per dollar of a small block Chevy engine I will order one or maybe two

Singer is for sure bleeding edge, and really cool, but dang they are pricey. Of course to their customers it is just another car.

No air-cooled engine can meet modern standards. These engines can only be retro-fitted in old cars, in tiny numbers and at enormous expense. Why would Porsche bother?

Porsche used the 964 case as a basis for the modern Turbo cars and that has proved a very reliable engine.
Why didn't the naturally aspirated car get the same engine?

The naturally-aspirated GT3 did get the Mezger block motor. But I understand your question; why not the rest of the 996 line? I think there's an article in this month's (Sept 2017) Excellence that partly addresses that question. The M96 motor was meant for the new water-cooled generation. But it was intended for "rational and low-cost production," and not racing. The wet sump was used to help avoid leaks. But when the factory wanted to go racing with a flat-6, they used the Mezger-blocked dry sump motor as the basis for the GT2/GT3 cars (and Turbo, to make the numbers such that development/tooling would be financially worthwhile).

So will Ed Pink still be building these Williams-engineered 4.0 liter motors? Are they based on an existing block? Right now the market for 3.6 motors/blocks is slim due to Singer supposedly buying up a lot of donor engines.

It's hard to believe a sewing machine company can build such a nice engine.

Very cool stuff, for sure. I sure hope they pull it off successfully. I sure hope I get to see one.

Anyone deriding Porsche for not having done this themselves, or not having carried through the Mezger motor into water cooled production in all models is just unaware of market realities. To do so would have meant paying GT3 prices for base model cars. Porsche simply could not have remained competitive had they done this.

I'm pretty sure that Porsche isn't wringing it's hands after seeing these photos...

I doubt that Singer has the wherewithal to design, engineer and market the 918, or go to LeMans with the 919.

Porsche will be OK.

(But, I certainly hope I someday hear a N/A 4.0liter flat-six "singing" through drainpipes that large!!!!)

Very cool. Singer has been doing a lot of testing lately on the road outside my friend's house out in Tujunga, I think I owe those guys a visit.

I cant wait to hear one of these at full chat on a track, bet it will sound insane!

I was never a Singer fan until I saw a few in person at Rennsport. The attention to detail on them really is astounding.

Looks beautiful.

Perplexed why we are comparing Singer to Porsche. I doubt it's Singer's goal to make Porsche jealous. They are doing their own thing, on a very small scale, for a very small market segment, and it's awesome. Just enjoy it for what it is.

I disagree. Porsche are wringing their hands with glee. Look at the publicity and magazine ink (blog electrons?) that Singer get for the marque in general. This is free advertising for Porsche with zero $ invested.

How long before Singer stop using 964's as a base and build cars 100% from the ground up, either using a VIN from a non existent rusty wreck or having the cars registered like Superformance GT40's etc?
