Need help opening an old file format

I have a 20mg folder on an external drive that I cannot open. When I double click on it nothing happens- it doesn’t say cannot open or open with... just nothing happens at all.

It has a .exe extension. File created in 2005. The hover over the file says: File description 32 bit self extractor module
company: xceed software www.xceedsoft.com file version 1.3.1.4

I’ve been to that website and for the life of me cannot figure out WTH to download to open this. The one thing that looked promising for an “Oops - that link doesn’t exist”

Is anyone familiar with this software?

I don't think you'll be able to 'open' it since it's an executable file (.exe).
Is it doing something in the back ground since you clicked it?

I’m hoping it’s 20mb of photos from an epic trip. If I can’t recover them from this they’re lost forever.

Its a self extracting zip - I can probably open it on my Linux systems.

20mb is probably too big to email - can you put it on a public dropbox or something? If you know how to use FileZilla I can set up an account on my server for you to upload it.

Shoot me a PM.

.exe is an application extension.

Either you don't have priveldges for it or, as is most likely for a 12 year old app your current OS is not supported.

Right click and run as admin.

If that does not work just delete it.

If after 12 years you don't remember what it was you don't need it.

Have to agree. If you need photos of an "epic" trip to remember it, then it wasn't all that epic.

Just visited exceed.com

You won't find anything there to open the file.

At some point in time you downloaded one of their apps.

What you have is an installer for their product.

Dump it.

Several programs can do this and in the past I have used WinRAR, WinZip, 7z, a HEX editor HxD Hex Editor and lastly right click on the file and go into the compatibility mode to try running it as an older version of your current OS. As far as I know the ones I mentioned are all free from Cnet.

If you are using Windows 10 then there can be issues when running 64 bit version of that OS. You can also try as a last resort to install software named Virtual Box which is now managed by Oracle. Once it is installed try installing Windows XP or other OS that might work if you have the original DVD's.

Thanks for the input. I don't mean to hijack. My files are on compact flash I know it's an old format but still the most reliable in car race recorder.

a folder and a file are 2 different things. a folder contains files
also as said a .exe is a program or application.

perhaps the extension got changed. if it is photos it may be a .jpg or something else.

Old non-standard self extracting zip (unlike PKZIP or WinZIP self-extracting stuff)

Linux unzip unzipped it just fine

Huge thanks to user "id10t" for extracting the pictures for me. It was such several pictures (not enough in hindsight) of a once in a lifetime opportunity I had via 3 days aboard the USS McFaul back in 2004.
