Thanks for this post. Fascinating stuff. Jay is more than a rich guy with toys. Thanks to him, history is being preserved.

Thanks for that. That is simply awesome. I googled Lanc ride and it costs membership fee plus $3500 canadian. As my father was a Lancaster pilot it would sure be great to go for a ride.

Those rebuild pics were just astounding!!! The same fascination I have for the Furhmann 4-cam Porsche engine, extends to these things!!! Just a thing of mechanical beauty!!! DROOOOOOL!

Back in the 90s I was fortunate to buy a Rolls Royce Griffin Engine (Spitfire MK26 and Avro Shackleton) that was being sold off by the local RAF station. Cost less than the shipping costs but worth it to just stare at the mechanical beauty. It had been partially disassembled to show the RAF cadets how it operated and the craftsmanship was incredible. Sold it to finance my first house and I think I got 5000 pounds for it.

You know why they called it "The Merlin?"
Because it is like magic. Would be cool to have one set up like Mr Leno does, really belongs in a museum

The Pompous wankers removed it claiming the page was for Rolls-Royce & Bentley cars only... lol Also, they started fainting and their heads just about exploded when I someone shared this video. An old Rolls-Royce with mostly modern GM running gear! ![]()

My Dad worked for Packard from 1935 to 1945 as a Tool and Die Maker...during the war the RR Merlin was what he worked on. Part of what he did was to work on a Merlin prototype for the P 38 fighter plane. In the History of Packard book published by the ACA, in the RR Merlin chapter there is a picture of him working in the shop where the Merlin was produced by Packard.
So that motor that Jay has, has some of my Dad's handiwork in it. I still have my Dad's tool and die making tools, as well as my Grandfathers mold making tools. The same can be said of nearly every Ford built between 1916 and 1959 had some of my Grandfathers handiwork as he was a Speciality Mold Maker for Ford. He also did a lot of restoration work for the Henry Ford Museum.

My Grandfather (R.I.P.) used to tell me the exact same thing. His obsession with Packard ran as deep as mine with Porsche and VW. He knew everything...like a walking encyclopedia.

Dad used to tell me that sometimes he would walk through the 2nd floor of the Packard Plant on East Grand Blvd where they would assemble the custom bodied cars...

From an article: "There was some talk throughout the war about fitting the P-38 airframe with a pair of Rolls Royce Merlin XX engines. However the War Production Board was unwilling to shut down the Lightning production for the several months it would have taken to retool for the engine swap. As a result, the Merlin project was shelved and no P-38 was ever flown fitted with Rolls Royce Merlin or Packard Merlin engines." |
