OK folks....three quick comments as seen from the BIG picture:

1. Biggest problem for every traffic snafu (including the one being discussed here) is people do not give a RAT'S azz about anyone but themself while on the roads.

2. When was the last time you saw ANYTHING mentioned on the nightly news about how to drive properly. Including:
  • basic rules of the road
  • basic etiquette
  • basic handling characteristics of a motor vehicle
  • psychological aspects of operating a motor vehicle while sharing the highway with others

3. For the life of me....don't know why someone has not created/invented/designed a communication device more sophisticated than the horn, middle finger, or emergency blinkers to inform/alert others in front or behind you of various items of significance.

Some kind of crawler like you see on TV these days. Messages could be pre-loaded such as:

"I'm in kind of a hurry....would you please move over one lane to the right so I might get by?"

"Thank you!"

"I'm sorry....my vehicle is suffering from a slight mechanical issue....I'll try to move over at first opportunity so that you can get by...thanks in advance for your patience!"

"I apologize.....I have a load of fragile cargo aboard and need to drive a bit conservative....I'll try to move over at first opportunity so that you can get by...thanks in advance for not tailgating as well as for your patience!"

"Urgent health issue!!! Please move out of the way so I can get to a hospital!!! Urgent!!!"

"FYI - you have stuff falling out of your vehicle!!! You may want to pull over somewhere and check your load for containment."

Etc etc.....

Anyway...as frustrating as it is (and trust me - I get frustrated every time I drive!) it seems more could be done about this. Starting with the (dishonest and lazy) media and (dishonest and lazy) public safety officials.

The biggest problem I see with solutions 2 or 3 having any effect is observation 1.

I was in my pickup truck in a line of cars driving a long road with no passing zone and we were all stuck driving under the speed limit.

I leave a few car lengths so I do not have to play hit the brakes every 30 seconds with the rest of the idiots.

The pretty girl behind me was one of the idiots driving up my rear bumper like tailgating me was going to make the 10 cars in front of us go faster.

My helper took a black sharpie, turned over a large legal size folder and wrote

"PULL MY HAIR
AND RIDE MY ASS"

He then held it up in the back window of our cab, it took a few before she finally sounded out all the words. Then she back off about 5-6 car lengths and stayed there.

"2 slow? 2 bad."

I'm one of the guys who maintains a constant speed during traffic jams regardless of the space in front. There can be 1/8 mile to the next car but I'm still going the speed where you never have to step on the brake. When I reach the next pack, they've started moving again. Makes it easy for truck drivers and calms panic waves. Unless they don't get it of course.

I've thought the same thing before, and have seen something like this for cars. Surely, you can see the issue. It would not be used in the manner above. It would be hacked or altered or programmed to say things much less polite and would actually end up causing more issues than if it didn't exist.

You know how wound up people can get from a simple horn honk or the finger. Just imagine if they started cussing at each other via text.

This behavior materially reduces the "carrying capacity" of the roadway on which you are driving and thereby increases congestion. When traffic has slowed to a stop and go crawl, it benefits everyone to just suck it up and keep those gaps as small as possible. Be polite and let folks in who are signaling for a lane change, of course, but otherwise do your best to reduce the amount of space you are "occupying". Leaving these big gaps in front of you in heavy, bumper to bumper traffic is also a pretty good way to earn an "obstructing the flow" ticket - as it should be.

We get a lot of weaving, inconsistent speed, erratic, no effs given driving here.

Maybe some of it is due to lane change assist and radar used to maintain distance from other vehicles. I’ve noticed if I pass after I’ve cleared a vehicle then move into their lane there can be some irritated drivers as their car brakes automatically.

And no the pic above wasn’t at 75mph, but at a light.

+1000
Self absorption + ignorance gets us the kinds of drivers we have on the road. I would add inattentiveness, but that might come under ignorance (too many people don't think driving requires their attention). I don't know how many times I've been in the passing lane overtaking a truck in the slow lane when someone going 20 mph faster than either of us runs right up on the back of the truck and slams on the brakes. Stupid. There is no logic to it. I think the driver is either too dumb to know, or to inattentive to realize, that if he's going to pass the truck he's going to have to get in the passing lane, and to do that he's going to have to get in line behind me.

Just so long as you do that in the right lane of multilane roads and not otherwise, sure, whatever.
