roll up door framing question

Need some help I can't get my garage door guy on the phone . I am framing for garage doors I want to go with 10x10 roll up doors . He gave me width and height dimensions to rough to but did not tell me how much height is needed from the bottom of the header to the finished ceiling . Looks like I'll be at 20 " is that enough ? I did some generic searches and it looks like 18 " is sufficient for most brands but I'd like to hear from someone that knows .

I think your height depends on the type of door and what style opener you use. You just need to worry about how high the door goes above the track when opening and then take into account if you're using a conventional opener or a jack shaft opener. The height above the track should be in your door installation information.

I put a roll-up door in my shed. The door height is 8ft..so the door roll is less than 18"
The door size will specify the clearance needed.
I really like the convenience of a roll-up. One finger to lift it..and it seals up good.

Maybe get some specs from a page like this...https://www.ebay.com/itm/Insulated-Roll-Up-Door-106-wide-x-100-high-with-lift-handle/141774880240?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.M BE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908110712%26meid%3D86c294 e598264e9f89ff933eddae4747%26pid%3D100677%26rk%3D2 %26rkt%3D25%26sd%3D141236416038&_trksid=p2385738.c100677.m4598

I think to be safe I'll frame for two doors 9x9 that way I'll have room for a hood if I choose to add in the future . I wanted to go 10x10 but it's just too tight , the center support wall will just be too thin for my taste . Thanks guys

Why rollup over conventional?

Also consider 1 large door, and a man door. You can get an 18 or 20' wide, but I'd probably do a 16 or 18' and a man door.

Here are some pics of my 10' tall door. I'd say at 18" you're going to be fine. I'd highly recommend the opener in the picture. Sorry the picture quality sucks. I must have been a bit jumpy when I took them.

I do not want the rails for a conventional door in the way of the lift . But now that I think about it there are extensions that bring the door higher to the ceiling.

My ceiling height is about 11 ' 10 " at the front of the garage where the doors will be installed .

OH! Are you going with the trackless roll up door? I think I misunderstood what you're doing.

Cabmando your pics are very helpful even though your door is a conventional panel door vs. a roll up door . I have been thinking I would go with insulated roll up doors because I didn't want the intrusion of the rails . But I just realized that I can go with rail extensions to get the door closer to the ceiling . So I may have to rethink my approach . And the style of door opener in your pics is what I am going to go with again for no intrusion into the garage . Thanks for the pics .

I'm putting a lift in the bay where that opener is. That's part of the reason I put that opener in there. That and the damn things are ridiculously smooth and fast. Conventional overhead doors cost a lot less and that style opener gives you full room to the ceiling.

Cab what model Liftmaster is that ? The more I think about this the more I am leaning towards a conventional insulated panel door with that style of door opener and rail extensions to get the door closer to the ceiling .

Actually thinking about a 10x10 and a 10x8 . That won't look too crazy and will give me the added width that I want for the bay that will have the 2 post lift . I have a dually pickup that I have to plan for being on the lift so the 10 ' width is a real plus . Most of the time my Boxster will reside in the garage so either bay would work . You guys have been a lot of help thank you !

Yes, installer can use 'high tracks' and get them up near ceiling. Also spec torsion springs, and torsion opener, like the Liftmaster.

I'll have to check to see exactly what model it is. I have two of them on 12x10 doors and really like them. I also have one of the old Wayne Dalton Idrive units on a 9x8. When my old Genie screw drives go in the garage I'll be putting the Liftmaster jackshaft openers in there.

I just did a new garage door so I had clearance for a lift. I could not raise the rails to do a conventional overhear door, and I didn't want a roll up door for cosmetic reasons. I looked at lots of option until I found the horizontal garage door:

https://contourclosures.com/

These have been available in Europe for a while, but a fellow in Virginia has gone through the red tape of getting UL approval and is marketing these in USA. I was one of his first retail customers here in the USA. Have a 16x8 version of his door. Might be worth checking into for your project.

What was the reason you couldn't use raised rails ? What is your ceiling height ? Mine is just under 12 ' .

I just checked and I bought the Liftmaster 3800 two pack. I bought these 5 years ago for $577 for the pair. I don't know what the difference is but the 8500 2 pack costs $577. I just realized the link below is the same company I bought my openers from back in 2012.
https://www.opendoorremote.com/8500-2-pack-liftmaster-elite-series-garage-door-opener/

And why the raised rails? Are you wanting to be able to open the door with the car on the lift?
