Volvo Ocean Race

I have no idea if any of you keep track of a most incredible race that happens every two yrs but the volvooceanrace.com is the top tier sailing event for sailors.

Real men in a real race that makes car races look like a walk in the park...you mean that one?

This link alone may grab some interest.

I like the move to a one-design boat and with a canting keel and water ballast, the thing should be a rocket. Certainly their race tracker has taken a big step forwards.

I've been fortunate to see them in Miami Boston and Newport.

I'll make it to Newport again. Fun, Outrageous, so special.

I've always loved open ocean racing like this. Definitely not a fan of the new boats.

They have one of these boats in the lagoon out in front of the Oracle headquarters, very cool and much larger in person than I would have thought.

Any ocean transit is likely to be a grueling affair, the Volvo more so than most

My last few years of ocean racing were mostly w/ this one

but some on these

wow, way cool!

Puts my wed nights to shame! I've only been in the ocean once but it doesnt really count since I could see land. What these guys do is nothing but amazing. 10/10th all the time, amazing.

I remember a weekly recap show the last time around, I need to check it out. I check the news once in a while but I loved the video and interviews.

Thanks for the heads up on the Volvo race, didn't realize it was on again.

Bummer to hear that they went one design! Will make for good racing on the water. But loses the creative design and development aspect of the event.

Still, Ill be excited to see some onboard video at speed. Amazing daily runs they lay down!

Bill, I love seeing those modern classics you have created. Surprising cool underwater hull form.
What is that last boat that you raced from your pic? Let me guess, a Nelson / Merick 60? Nice ride, what ever it is.

Cheers Richard

The tracker is pretty good. They had similar for the TransPac.
In the 1983 TransPac I crewed on an SC50. That was an exciting experience and a cake walk compared to what these guys/gals are doing. After being up for a number of days, during the race, I never slept as deep and probably never will. We used the Swedish Watch system. Lots of fun driving downhill at night at 20 knots + with no Moon.

I met a bunch of those racers in Newport back in the 80's. Between the stories of monster waves, hellish storms, hitting whales and breaking keels, it is a race that is not for the timid or weak. Trimarans were the order of the day. The technology now is that of NASA.

This one was the last true race boat. It's a Baltic 55 ex Whitbread(Whitbread was the predecessor of the Volvo) It did 2 Whitbreads way back in the day. The modern Volvo boats are grown up versions of the International 14s we raced in college

The last schooner I raced was this one, it's a custom built balsa core w/ unstayed carbon spars, very responsive for a displacement hull

Holy cow, impressive AL parts. That boat should stand up to a good beating without too much creaking and groaning. Out here in ULDB land they use a special plywood and layers of glass for bulkheads/etc. What is the ballast to weight ratio?
