Forbes article on the plant based food industry 2018
Interesting to me since I'm part of a business that produces plant based meals to go. Changes are coming quickly. Pretty long article but a good read.
Here's Why You Should Turn Your Business Vegan In 2018 https://www.forbes.com/sites/katrinafox/2017/12/27/heres-why-you-should-turn-your-business-vegan-in-2018/#7ded6d3e2144 "No longer relegated to the fringes of society where for so long it was mocked for being ‘weird’ or ‘extreme’, veganism is going mainstream. Finally recognized for its positive impact on sustainability and animal welfare without the need to sacrifice taste or style, vegan living is starting to become the norm. The continued proliferation of vegan and plant-based business stories and developments that have occurred during the past year demonstrate that this movement is just getting started in making its mark – and entrepreneurs are leading the way." |

Get off my lawn!

We drove 95 miles for our Christmas day family gathering. We passed countless farms and I know we saw well over a thousand head of cattle total. Vegan will not be but a small part of any food supply for a long time if ever. When I can get a salad of any sort for even 1/2 the cost of a double cheeseburger in any city I will surprised. There is a chicken or burger joint on every block in the urban areas.

And one other point - plant based food is not about salads. There is an incredible amount of R&D the food/culinary world around making plants better and more satisfying. Although I'm not a chef, one of my main functions in our business is developing new recipes. If interested, you can take a look at our menu below. https://naturesplate.biz/pages/full-menu

Clearly not the norm, but a good healthy choice that more are gradually making.
Funny timing for me, this trend. I lived about Ten years eating only veggie. The added seafood then included poultry, thru resent years. Last night had a delicious steak that my brother brought over, first in many years. It's good that you are helping to make this health food choice more available. Cheers Richard |

As a person who raises chickens I can attest to the fact that they are only slightly more intelligent than a head of broccoli, and perhaps somewhere south of a green bean on the intelligence scale. I have no problem with having chicken declared a vegetable.

lol Wd, good stuff!
Mark, I also find this development amazing, but like Richard have been a bit early to the plate so to speak. I had a productive period of only plant based eating for 10 years as well, and to be honest it was a blast, absolutely loved it. Then I met the wife who didn't really agree with it (and nor my colleagues at my new job, which basically involved killing animals). I now enjoy a good steak for sure, but would happily go without for long, long periods with good alternatives at a decent price. Normalised because they taste great, full stop.

Vegan is definitely a growing trend. It doesn't have to come anywhere near supplanting meat-based diets in order to be huge on its own. As with many trends, a person could get rich just paying attention to what's happening in California and is poised to expand to the rest of the country. I can't count how many times this has been true over the 35 years I've lived here.
The reasons are many but health and environmental sustainability lead the pack along w animal cruelty issues. I have not gone vegan but have many close friends who have and I eat a lot of delicious vegan meals. I avoid anything processed and try to eat only organically raised meat and fish. It's easier to do in a big city than somewhere rural unless you're raising your own food animals organic or have a source. The commercial beef and poultry industry is bad news.

From the article
""Competition is heating up in the race to produce plant-based burgers that look, feel and taste like their animal-based counterparts, even to the point of ‘bleeding’ red juice.""" I don't know.... That just sounds so natural...... Don't have a problem with veggie meals. I actually like them and enjoy them. But when you are trying to make a veggie taste and look like animal products I have a problem. Have your read about all the processes and chemical that go in this technology. Embrace the "vegginess" in vegetables rather than change their nature into something that they are not.

Vegan should not try to mimic hamburgers or chicken nuggets. It is what it is, and if it doesn't appeal to you, eat something else.
