chip tracking devices
just purchased a 93 jeep wrangler that I think was well bough after a few months of searching. that being said I suspect since it's lifted & not stock my insurer would not be interested in covering it for anything beyond liability. with a vehicle that old I tend to agree, but with a soft top and half doors I will be leaving it unlocked most every night in the driveway saying "have at it".
I'm in the heart of silicon valley so the crime rate is not high, but I do live on a corner where my driveway is front & center to drivers by so it will be noticed. the guy I bought it from was security conscious having installed a rather common center console lock box and a hidden toggle main power switch with in. he also installed a removable steering wheel with a puck that fits/locks over the steering shaft so it can't be visegrip steered. all great measures with all that being said I'm considering a tile type tracking device to add another layer of protection. what might the pelican brain trust recommend? I don't mind paying a small fee monthly to maintain the service. what are you guys using? my domino is under lock & key and insured to the hilts... the new jeep not so much ![]() all tethered down for the 200 mile tow home today ![]() happy new year pelicans t

A tile type device only works when people with the app are close. If its stolen - will they be close?
If I were going to use one of those for a higher value asset - I'd buy a few different ones to add to the potential it would be discovered by a ping.... ...or get a lojack.

Nice Jeep! But I wonder with all those security measures already, who is going to be that determined to steal a pretty common older Wrangler?

My brother has a GPS tracker in his P-Car.
Think LoJack but different brand. I believe it requires a basic monthly fee but he can track it anywhere, gets alerts if it moves when it's not supposed to etc..

If your insurance company won't insure it, I suggest suggest you find a new insurance company.

I have not used them but GPS tracking devices are now available that do not require a monthly fee. You buy a prepaid sim card with XX$$ on it and if the car disappears or leaves your geofencing area it will text you it's location. This is what I would use and just hard wire it to the jeep.

I can't imagine it won't be insured. I do this for a living. We don't ask about lifts.

to come clean I have not talked to my insurer yet, but am reluctant to do full coverage due to cost & a 25 year old rig. old jeep? old is cool. with the elevated minimum auto coverage to maintain my balloon policy id expect around $100 a month and that's more than id like to spend. I might have to cut loose the cleaning lady at that sum.... t

Is the Jeep going to be a DD or just a weekend toy?
If a weekend toy, give Leyland West a try. I just moved my E21 over to them and it has full coverage for $200 a year.

If I lived in a neighborhood where a hidden kill switch inside a locked box, a removable steering wheel and steering puck were not enough to protect a 25 year old Jeep from theft I'd find a new neighborhood.

He's on the right track with the detachable steering wheel. But he needs this wheel:
![]() Also, powder your whole body white. Every morning, bow before your Jeep and do this: ![]() Then spray-paint your mouth silver, yell: "Witness me!", get in your Jeep, and drive to work. No one will mess with your Jeep.

Well, there is that, too. I never park anything outside and I lock my garages, I have an alarm system, and two noisy, mean looking dogs so...

I'm considering a tracking device for my car. Right now I have a Cyclops remotely operated fuel pump relay. I consider it just another way to delay it if somebody really wants to take the car - if they're not prepared to haul it away.

No full coverage because it's lifted? Bull****. Time for a new insurance company.
Ours have always been lifted and always had full coverage. Depending on the year (newer is more $$) - between 45 and 60 per month. Full coverage, no deductible on comprehensive, $250 on collision, and three times the minimum on the liability. angela

I use a product called trackimo on my cars and bikes. Check it out - works well most of the time and keeps a customized data log. If you're not driving the vehicle for over a couple of weeks unplug it or it will drain your battery.

Umm, maybe go get quotes before posting online? I strongly suspect you will easily find insurance and for pretty cheap unless you have a horrible record or live in Compton.
