Good for you, Hugh!

Some people have trouble with retirement for various reasons. The consulting gig has been a life-saver for lots of people.

KFC911 01-10-2018 02:22 AM

Congratulations Hugh...couldn't happen to a nicer pelican imo...enjoy the rest of the journey....YOU'RE driving :)!!!

Congrats....It sounds like you will have all the benefits of being retired without HAVING to be at the office every day. To be able to pick and choose your assignments will be a good way to slowly back away from working life, and enjoy relaxation much more.

Congrats Hugh, living the dream!

widgeon13 01-10-2018 04:26 AM

Congrats, enjoy.

When I retried after 30 years and being an officer of the company it was like being fired. One day I was working and the next day I was gone.:D

You are very fortunate to work for a good company and obviously have made a major contribution over many years!SmileWavy

Congrats Hugh!

astrochex 01-10-2018 04:53 AM

Congrats, Hugh!

Especially for retiring on your own terms with a plan in place. Enjoy!

masraum 01-10-2018 05:07 AM

Wow, that sounds fantastic. Congrats and enjoy.

Seahawk 01-10-2018 06:05 AM

Let me know if you get close to Maryland in your BA RV!

Congratulations ! My retirement officially started 12/1/17 and I have been busy non-stop ! I'm sure you will love it .

recycled sixtie 01-10-2018 06:13 AM

Well done Hugh. It sounds like you have the best of both worlds now. :)

Macroni 01-10-2018 06:47 AM

Envious......

Craig T 01-10-2018 07:42 AM

Congratulations! You're going to love it Hugh...and after the "postpartum depression" ("my wife's expression for my behavior after retirement), you'll wish you did it sooner.

The side gigs will help ease you into it. I stayed busy with charity work until I found a rhythm. Now a year in, I'm surprised how busy I am.

flatbutt 01-10-2018 08:05 AM

Congratulations Hugh! When do you come to the other coast?

wildthing 01-10-2018 08:14 AM

Congrats! Yeah consulting gig, 20 hours a week, or something, keeps you a bit busy and ease your way into having all that free time. Although I did hear something about talking to a tax expert about income and SS...

Today he asked me gently if I truly plan to retire could I give him and HR a date, apparently he can't advertise for my replacement until I've given official notice. He made it very clear he wasn't pushing, and I could stay there until I die, if I wanted to.

So I called HR and gave them the date of March 19, 2018. I must say, HR was amazing, within 1/2 hour they assigned me a retirement counselor; for pension, benefits, 401K, COBRA, etc. I'll be taking COBRA until I turn 65 nine months after I retire until I can draw Medicare.

The Boss also said I can come back as a consultant with as much work as I'd like to take on. Several other Studios, Sony, Netflix, Warner Bros., Paramount and Universal have already offered to have me come on as a consultant.

Retirement may not be as relaxing as I thought it would be, but at least I'll be in the enviable position of being able to pick and choose assignments. SmileWavy

You suck! (green with jealousy).
Serial, have a good time and enjoy.

I've known people who were so into their career that it became their identity, the work defined them. When they retired they lost their sense of self and worth.

Most of them ended up sitting in a chair waiting to die, and often that didn't take long.

I'm betting that won't be a problem with you, and the idea of consulting would cover that transition even if it were a problem.

I'm counting the days until I retire, obviously you've earned it!

Congrats, and color me green with envy also!
I’d say you’re lucky - but I sense there was a lot of hard work, knowledge, skill and determination involved. Therefore - good job.
Always glad to hear of a fulfilling career coming to a graceful close. Or, in the case of consulting - a graceful transition. If the consulting thing works - it sounds like you’ve entered the “extra bonus round”.
I hope I can be so lucky someday too.

Cheers!!!
