"Your Boss," as if you have one you listen to that is not named "Mrs R."

Hope the mudslides didn't get you.

Get it.

I went to the DMV with my daughter the other day to take care of some title transfer stuff (the ultimate test of patience, right?). 2-1/2 hours in line - no problemo. I really didn't have anything else to do that day .... :)

Today he asked me gently if I truly plan to retire could I give him and HR a date, apparently he can't advertise for my replacement until I've given official notice. He made it very clear he wasn't pushing, and I could stay there until I die, if I wanted to.

So I called HR and gave them the date of March 19, 2018. I must say, HR was amazing, within 1/2 hour they assigned me a retirement counselor; for pension, benefits, 401K, COBRA, etc. I'll be taking COBRA until I turn 65 nine months after I retire until I can draw Medicare.

The Boss also said I can come back as a consultant with as much work as I'd like to take on. Several other Studios, Sony, Netflix, Warner Bros., Paramount and Universal have already offered to have me come on as a consultant.

Retirement may not be as relaxing as I thought it would be, but at least I'll be in the enviable position of being able to pick and choose assignments. SmileWavy

That sounds great. I'd definitely keep working as an independent, you can control how much you want to work, when, where, etc. That will alleviate one of the boondoggles of retirement, getting old from lack of activity and purpose. Though that is not a problem for everyone, it is for some. You are still a relatively young guy.

Best of luck! :)

Congratulations, Hugh! Its time to enjoy the spoils of your work! Enjoy that family and take some time off to go fishing and hunting.

Congratulations Hugh! And...well payed sir! The occasional, by choice only consultant gig sounds ideal, man! Where do I sign up for something like that!

I'm hopefully two years away!

Enjoy your baddazz RV some more now!

onewhippedpuppy 01-10-2018 12:28 PM

Congrats Hugh, you deserve it!

All the best for a happy fun change in lifestyle.

Maybe there is a couple of hours consultancy on behalf of Disney required in this part of the world. I'd be on for another Maranui bacon and eggs, and a drive up the coast :)

I will add this to others suggestions although you did not ask for suggestions. If you enjoy your contract work go for it especially if you feel you need more money. If you don't enjoy it and don't need the money then consider as others have said pursue more leisure activities such as rv driving.

A lot depends on your wife and what she likes to do. This is the time to do your bucket list. You may not be completely aligned with your wife's activities but you will work something out. Work at staying healthy. :)

Delighted to hear it, Hugh. I've been secretly hoping you would take the plunge and move near your daughter. I couldn't be happier that your plan is finally coming together. Best of luck and may your retirement be as long and prosperous as your working career.

cstreit 01-10-2018 06:40 PM

You lucky bastard! Congrats!

Shaun @ Tru6 01-10-2018 06:42 PM

Congratulations Hugh! Keep working, a little, see your grandkids more, and relax a little. You moved to PA yet?

Hugh R 01-10-2018 08:39 PM

Shaun, I found PA real estate taxes are insane and higher than CA. Current plan is to continue to live in CA and visit PA/NYC to see the daughter/3 grandsons a few times a year.

I was in PA over Xmas and it was like 6 degrees, and in CA it was 60. I grew up in Boston and looking at your snow and temps this last week (shudder). , I like sweeping my driveway when its 60/70 in January.

Shaun @ Tru6 01-11-2018 04:45 AM

That's a shame about PA RE taxes. It has been insanely cold here but today through Satruday it's in the 50s. Then back to seasonal 30s-40s. Weather is very strange these days.

Congrats, I worked part time for about 6 months after I gave my notice to help transition my replacement. After that I worked for a week so my replacement could have a vacation. I turned down everything after that, I had plenty of things to do, and I guess I’m just lazy.

We moved to Florida a few years ago as I also do not like the cold weather, also the cost of living is reasonable.

Hi Hugh--Congrats from Kathy and me (BRPORSCHE's (Tom's) parents). Seems like just yesterday we were watching you explode a Mississippi River ferry. Fun times! Gerry

Congrats! Enjoy it!

Superman 01-14-2018 11:39 AM

Congratulations Hugh, and wishes for many blissful years doing what YOU want.

strupgolf 01-14-2018 02:50 PM

Hugh, a great choice. My wife retired last June and myself last Jan. We both love it in our new house each and every day. How close are you to Pasadena, we'll be out there early next month. Again, great choice.
