Oh golly, not that!!
We still have a land line because my wife insists. I only pay $3.95 per month for it so it is not a big deal. If you are married, you will understand, some arguments are just not worth having.
I virtually never answer it, but it does have a answering machine and if it is important at all, they will leave a message. If no message, it was just forgotten and ignored. I just received "An very important message" from Microsoft. To quote the message "My license for Microsoft has been expired" dang it. I am supposed to call 866-291-3926 immediately. I will get right on that on the next day that does not end in a Y. So if you are bored, please call in for me.

What? No call telling you to send money to avoid being arrested for being a jury duty no show?

We still have one at $60+/mo. It serves a couple of purposes. Since we live in a fire danger area, and additionally have very infrequent power outages, I can usually plug in the old style phone into the jack and have service. Additionally we don't have a cell signal here, so getting rid of it is out of the question. They've installed steel poles in our area that won't burn, so if we ever get a cell tower in the area, and it gets knocked out, we most likely will still have land line service.

In the Northern California fires this year, our land line was the only way we could communicate with the outside world. And yes, I'm old!

All of the AT&T cell towers got vaporized, so we were without cell service for several days. They eventually scattered some trailer-mounted ones around the Napa Valley.

our land line was ten dollars and we cut it about six months ago. I only had it to give out a number to people I didn't want to talk to and never answered it.

Actually having the land line came in handy recently. I run my business from my home office. I was setting up getting paid from a government agency. They would accept snail mail from the post office, or a FAX for the forms. Email was not allowed.
So I had to send a fax. Welcome to the 80s, the 1880s! I have had to receive one fax as well. Fortunately the color laser printer-copier-scanner-fax machine I bought worked like a charm for all of that.

No phone lines up in the hills of Marysville where I just moved. 2 cells and a mifi, $200mo. YAG. No gas, sewer or water bills, but all electric, $400mo. Double yag.

I was hanging on to ours when we were in our house. It was great if the weather went to hell and cell coverage sucked. When we moved, I didn't get a new one. I'm all cell all the time now. I wouldn't mind having a landline, but not enough to bother getting one.

I have one. Sort of. Its a house phone via voice over internet. I have an answering machine and oOooma voice mail. I can check the voice mail on line if i need to. Ooma box was about $100 5 years ago. Cost, around $4/month. Not really a service charge. Its all taxes. Use it a lot. I use my smart phone when I need it but at home, I dont really need it.

I got rid of my landline in 2002. I started to wonder why I was paying $40 a month to get nothing but calls from telemarketers. I've owned 4 houses and none have had a land line.

In Key West, after hurricane Irma, only working communications were landlines.

We get our internet through the phone co. I think the land line is essentially free.... As for the MS update DO IT.... we upgraded at our house and we're 100% Mac... because you just can't be too careful with those update....cause I heard Macs run DOS... right??

Banned but not out, yet..

As a former “wireless”telecom employee, I learned on the job that in a disaster cell towers are setup to run on generators up to a week, which is the average time it takes to restore power. However, if power, roads, etc are out longer than that they will run out of diesel. In that event, land lines will still work and you will still be able to reach 911. If your cell towers are taken out due to fire, flooding, tornado, hurricane it will take several days for the cows (cell on wheels site) to be deployed. As a result I will always keep a minimal service local land line (plus free LD using Google Voice). Just be sure that you have an old fashioned push button or rotary phone since since batterypowered phones using a base station will not work.

I got a "free" land line with my DSL service. Haven't used it yet. It's been a long time since I had an actual telephone in my hand.

I still have my old Bell Telephone unit in the closet. Back in the 1980s when the government broke up bell telephone and allowed the user to actually own the telephone I bought my telephone. Made in USA high quality old school goodness.
