A back-handed compliment or ??

I had a young guy from a local glass co. out this AM to give me an estimate on replacing a large double pane window with a bad seal. Mid 20's, well dressed with cargo shorts, polo shirt with his name and co. name stitched. Also arms and legs covered with very colorful tats, had a shaved head, neatly trimmed beard and those weird earrings with holes in the middle and a big hole in the ear.
Very personable and knew what he was doing....
Then
When getting ready to leave he asked if I wanted him to call with the estimate or e-mail? I said e-mail and gave him the ........@gmail. He entered it into his phone then looked up and said:

"you know, most people your age I deal with are still on AOL!"

Wasn't sure how to take it so I just mumbled something to the effect that I was to ... 25 years ago but I'm not that much of a Luddite.

All in all, it was rather funny after I thought about it. Particularly as several of my old friends from my days in the USAF are still on AOL.

Was just an observation.

FWIW finally got my mom off AOL not too long ago.

I still use AOL for email....what exactly is wrong with it, other than being an old fogey, luddite method of communication ?

It seems here lately, that most people totally embrace change, for the sake of change, and not much else. I don't see a reason to change every year to get all the new capabilities of what's available.....what worked 10 years ago still works just fine today.

I think you handled it well. There is no point in shouting at him get off my lawn and putting your blood pressure up. Another quote?

My brother and I couldn't get my dad off AOL, he was on cable internet so could have switched to any mail service but AOL was his 'old comfortable shoe'. When I logged onto his computer I had to go through the AOL interface, honestly didn't seem any different than all the other web browsers.

I have gone from AOL (on dialup ) to hotmail, to yahoo, then sold my soul to the devil and now am on gmail.

I do use bing as my web browser but only because it has a cleaner home page,I use google on my phone. When I'm trying to get an old computer onto the internet I use firefox because it is an easy install.

Not arguing that point at all, nothing wrong with AOL if it works for you .... just that I read an article recently about the demographics of AOL and how many people still pay for it monthly not realizing you don't have to and AOL makes no effort to tell them otherwise.

I have an AOL email account. All my garbage mail gets sent there. I currently have 10,819 new mail

An AOL email account most likely means they were using email before many here got out of diapers

One related note ... if you are job hunting / sending your resume, make sure to have a modern email account. If you have an aol, yahoo, hotmail etc. account, you will be dating yourself and it may not reflect well on your ability on the computer as well.

Another option would be to reply .... "that's not what your mother said".

I just get compliments that they thought i was quite a bit younger then the 41 I really am..Which is not bad considering I don't exercise, used to smoke and drink and don't eat my veggies.

I think it's the staying single and not having kids that keeps me from turning grey and bald and what not.

But hey, If y'all are happy with a compliment where somebody basically says
"most oldtimers like yerself are on AOL."

Good for you !
