Texas Highschool Non Shooting Today
They locked down the kids at the HS our son attends. Another former student made it onto a school bus, made threats, then entered the school and made more threats, but ultimately hauled ass. The police found his back pack, filled with ammo and clips, but no gun. The 17yr was arrested about 1/2 mile away in a shopping center.
Our boy was about to leave on a trip to a baseball tournament, but was locked down for hours. He's pissed, and rightfully so.

Sooner or later every school in the US will have some type of incident at the rate this is going. I'm glad your son is safe!

Where is the parent to give that kid the good old fashion ass kicking they deserve?
Glad no one was harmed. We had 4 local schools on high alert over social media threats. One person has been caught and I hope they catch the rest. Then I hope they make a really good example out of whoever made the threats. |

I'm fairly certain most high schools have already. I know mine did way back when. Ignacio "Nacho" brought a gun to school, but was tipped off by other students. I didn't hear about it that day, it wasn't a part of the news, and I never saw "Nacho" again.
A year later, a couple of X students murdered 5 at the local Taco Bell. That did make the news, and we weren't surprised when we heard. The community kept a good eye on them, and police did what they could, but it wasn't enough.

Really Petrolhead, if you are an American without the famous cowboy mentality, it's a real head scratcher to see the conversation unfold.

i'm a gun freak.
i dont think arming teachers is the key. on the bright side, they will sell more guns. the gun manufactures would LOVE that!! but thinking back, i had ONE teacher of ALL the teachers i had in the history of my life; i could see Mr B carrying a gun. of course he was an ex-cop, teaching intro to law enforcement. the Rest!!? holy crap. Mr G, toting..Mr. Arnold?!! MR Arnold barely understood how to teach Geometry.

Vash,
I don't believe arming them is the key but I do believe it should be used as one part of the solution. I think making it more difficult to enter with a gun through electronic locks and bulletproof glass on all points of entry and any low windows, and then the potential shooter knowing once in they could face return fire would drastically reduce not only the number of fatalities but the number of school shootings in general. |

They need to be made an example. Drop the hammer on them. My problem with the student they found in Van Wert is that they aren't releasing his name. Being a small community I'm sure people already know but still, release the name of the person who made the threat and embarrass the hell not only out of them but out of the parents so the parents wake up and doing something about it as well. If any of my kids were dumb enough to make a threat either seriously or as a "joke" they're just dumb enough to go to jail or at a minimum get a sever ass beating as a result. It's time kids fear the consequences of their actions again. Very seldom did I fear the legal consequences of doing something stupid but I DID fear what my dad would do if I did something to bring shame to the family.

i remember me going to school. there was no fear..it was just plain old boring days. i wish that for kids now. i cant see running the gauntlet of metal detectors and bulletproof check points fostering that. they need to keep nuts from buying guns..and maybe dont give the shooters the audience. just kill them, zero fanfare, zero news.

"Instead of making dead teachers into saints, make them safer when they are still alive. Make it possible for schools to have smaller class sizes so that we can get to know our students and look out for the ones who need help. Hire more counselors and school nurses and social workers and psychologists so that many people are caring for each child. HELP us prevent this. Take away guns from people who will murder us. Stop taking money from the NRA and proving how soulless you are. Keep us safe so I can do my job. How dare you put me into constant danger so that you can be reelected. How dare you make me choose between saving children or making my own children motherless. How dare you make me into a hero when I just want to teach." https://medium.com/@rebeccaberlinfield/a-letter-from-a-furious-teacher-81d0590e3b0

I didn't click the link either but I'm sure she was. But again, if you truly want to talk about school safety, and she made some good points, the NRA doesn't belong in that conversation and the fact that a member of congress gets campaign contributions from the NRA has no real bearing either. The NRA teaches responsible handling of firearms not going out and shooting up a school. The NRA defends the second amendment and that's where people attack them for what they do. The NRA didn't cause the school shooting or this teachers' perceived lack of safety at her job...

I'm trying to be very careful in my words because this topic could easily get moved to the PARF section where it would end up a giant turd... but the use of the NRA is a political ploy more so than it is a serious attempt to make schools safer.
