I have a buddy who is a idiot

I have a buddy who is a idiot...

He has given con men from Guyana between $70,000 and $80,000 in the last 6-8 months.

He's about 100 lbs over weight (looks like a egg), Type 1 diabetic who thinks he can eat a pound of chocolate covered almonds and just do more insulin to correct his blood sugar levels. He also smokes pot everyday. I've seen him smoke 3 joints back to back in a 15-20 minute period.

I've know this guy for 37 years. Others in our group 45 years. We all have told him he was being ripped off and he won't believe us.

It started out he was looking at porn on the net and found a $2.99 a minute web site where you watch the girl. It progressed to her telling him she would move here and marry him. She was supposed to arrive Christmas Day with her inheritance (in gold).

I don't know all the stories because when you question him he gets defensive and angry.

His Credit Union caught his first screwing by these people and canceled his internet banking access. He gave them his bank account number and they deposited $2,500. They tried to take money out of his account 3 days later. The $2,500 was fake.

Like he had to send her $300 because she needed to go to the hospital to have tampons inserted. He told me this and I said that while I wasn't a expert on that part of the female anatomy I was pretty sure that the part of the body a babies head comes out of has no need of help putting a tampon in there. { . }

He told her we were all calling her a con man and she told him that we were just jealous. She then gave him the name and email address of a policeman he could contact to see if she was a noble and trustworthy person. He failed to see the stupidity of that and actually contacted "The Policeman"

Then "she" started to con him with her gold. She was having problems with her inheritance and getting it out of the country. My telling him that gold was the most easiest commodity to exchange on the planet and every city in the world has someone who will buy it from you. Somehow they sent him a wafer of gold worth about $95 and the guy who bought it from him here warned him about fake gold scams.

Christmas day when she was supposed to be here (he sent her money for the plane ticket and warm clothes). She emailed him saying she had landed in Cuba and their Customs wanted $16,000 is duty for all the gold she had with her. Next day she had landed in Georgia and Customs there wanted $12,000 in duty's. Third day she landed in Philadelphia and Customs there wanted $8,000......Her next stop was Edmonton, AB. where she needed $6,000. He actually email a buddy who lives there and asked him to drive to the airport and look for her.

A month ago he asked each of us to lend him $10,000 to which he would pay us back $20,000 in 30 days. We all said no. He got mad so I never found out what it was for.

He has been talked to by all of our group, the local police fraud department and the RCMP, to no avail. We might as well have been talking to his dog.

Last week we found out he sent them another $12,000

I can't speak that he is that stupid.......... And no I won't give any of you his address.

LWJ 03-06-2018 07:22 PM

P.T. Barnum said it long ago.

drkshdw 03-06-2018 07:31 PM

It's his money. Let him do what he wants with it. Not that it's that easy to separate yourself from that since you've known him for so long but the only person you can save is yourself.

HardDrive 03-06-2018 07:34 PM

Dumb fuch.

LakeCleElum 03-06-2018 07:38 PM

Hard to believe, but true......Some local chick will swoop down and take him for a ride soon.....

pwd72s 03-06-2018 08:06 PM

Tell him to take up pool. At least then the money would remain in the vicinity...

svandamme 03-06-2018 08:39 PM

I had a friend coworker like that in Holland,
hey bought a new bike
cool, when you go pick it up
i don't , they'll send it over
huh?
yeah it's in england , just sent the money with western union
ok, you're not getting a bike, you just sent money to scammers
you think?
i'm sure
you're so negative
ok, we'll see

At some point i got so fed up with her stupid ****, attracting problems like a supermagnet.
when she dumped her safe BF and got involved with a new dude... and within 2 months said she was getting married to him..All we knew was, he's unemployed and he looks like hes way to twitchy...not firing on all cyllinders.

i flat out told her "I don't wanna know about it, If you don't wanna take advice, I don't want to worry about you anymore.. You are going down hill fast."

2 years later when i was already back in Belgium, i got the news that she had been beaten to death by that guy, who turned out to be a certified nutjob. He had beaten her to a pulp in a psychotic episode.

Some people can't be helped, they don't want it.

Sorry but your buddy has mental health issues. (for real) Going by your story, I doubt he could pass any sort of mental competency test.

Obvious but, no matter what... Do not give him money & don't enable his behavior in any way.

I agree. His diabetes and his eating sugar by the pound. He doesn't care that all those crystalline structures are bouncing along his capillaries damaging them and when they repair themselves less blood flows thru his brain. Atrophying as he sits there being a idiot.

Five years ago He had "retired" from his job. Retire or get fired actually. So instead of getting a pension he took the cash equivalent which took him a couple years to go thru. Then he remortgaged his house with the credit union. Then when he needed more money he got a second mortgage on the house. Borrowed $26K, owed them $40K. Two years ago he was waiting to get his portion from his mothers estate. He finally got it about 10 months ago. We told him to pay off the second mortgage (he did), pay off any credit cards, put $1,000 on each of his utilities. Then put the rest into a term deposit. He then started looking at a $60,000 renovation of his kitchen and then a $40,000 reno of his bathroom. In hindsight I wish he had done either of those. The money is all gone now, just like his mind. None of us are giving him a dime and have told him so.

Phew.

Sometimes I'm frightened by just how stupid members of the human race can be.

Healthcare and Common law keeps morons from Darwinning.
Idiocracy, it's not a movie, it's a documentary of the future.

That...that [shaking my head and thumping my ear to make sure I heard this correctly] sounds vaguely familiar.

Think of how stupid the average person is and then consider that half of them are even stupider than THAT! That one keeps me awake at night!

911_Dude 03-07-2018 03:17 AM

What does this person do that he can be so bad with money, yet have so much to spare? Sad.

Jims5543 03-07-2018 03:31 AM

Send him to Vegas with reservations at the Bunny Ranch.

Get this guy laid and get it out of his system. Maybe with an empty ball sac he will start thinking clearly.

Wow!

Rick Lee 03-07-2018 04:23 AM

A fool and his money were lucky to get together in the first place.

jhynesrockmtn 03-07-2018 05:13 AM

Has he always been this stupid? My ex father in law was exhibiting this behavior about 20 years ago. Compulsive shopping, responding to scams, etc. He is a 33 year career Navy Officer, retired Captain. When he retired he owned a nice home on 10 acres and had some savings and was debt free. Today in his late 70's he's in a memory care place, crazy as a loon, the assets are leveraged to the hilt to pay for all of the stupid crap he bought. Nobody could stop him as he was "competent" when he was buying his 5th Shark vacuum and the jewelry from TV at 3am. Sad.

I'm struggling with this issue with my parents...dad and I are on the same page....mom isn't. I we all drop today...someone will hit the lottery....it would be gone in an instant. We all agree on this aspect...but nothing ever changes. I don't know how to deal with it either :(.

911 Rod 03-07-2018 05:58 AM

He needs a cat.

A pet could help actually.

Maybe a dog would get him walking everyday and get some needed oxygen to his brain.

Then some serious exercise to clear up his thinking process.

Right now it's like he's drunk, only it's glucose induced.

A serious change in diet.

If he spent that money on going to a fat farm he would have been way better off.

Sunroof 03-07-2018 06:08 AM

Send him to Dr. Phil!!!!

ckelly78z 03-07-2018 06:09 AM

Yep, sucker born every minute. Just when you think people can't be more gullible, and stupid, they prove you wrong.

Thios guy needs a friends "Intervention" to try to set him straight.

sammyg2 03-07-2018 06:09 AM

Someone once said: "a fool and his money are my best friends".

Our decisions and actions have consequences, or at least they should have.

That's how people learn. But when society or gubmint bails out people for their stupid mistakes, they keep making them.

911 Rod 03-07-2018 06:11 AM

Maybe with his heath issues he feels like he won't be here for long anyway and is trying to get his last chance at happiness.
Maybe 2 cats.

Usually starts much sooner with their own parent(s) imo. In my lifetime, I've been around more of those than the type you refer to...YMMV.

kach22i 03-07-2018 06:59 AM

This is a slow death by a thousand cuts.

Somebody that is depressed and doesn't want to fight for life anymore.

I don't believe in medication (anti-depressants) although that may be an option for him.

Only someone that doesn't like themselves would hurt themselves so much, and if that's the case he may be too far along for walking everyday and taking apple cider vinegar or other homeopathic cures.

If he wants it to end, then maybe the best you can do is make sure he doesn't have access to firearms.

scottmandue 03-07-2018 07:04 AM

Do you have his email?

GWN7 03-07-2018 07:13 AM

He's got a dog. A bernese mountain dog that he keeps very good care of. Has him groomed every two months or so. His physical shape makes walking the dog a impossibility. He's a egg and waddles when he walks. Most people when they walk use their toes for balance. Diabetics because of nerve damage can't use their toes so they waddle.

Getting him laid? He's type 1 diabetic. Which means that part of the plumbing don't work. He told another buddy the little blue pills don't work. But that doesn't stop him from trying. Last summer he was in and around the low track (where street hookers work) and according to him a girl was hitch hiking and he offered to give her a ride. She saw his wallet sitting in the center console and when he stopped for a stop sign she grabbed it and bolted. Him being a waddling egg didn't go after her.

When he told that story I laughed. Just giving her a ride? :)

No firearms. He has a crossbow. Which he paid $500 for. So he decided that is how much he should get for it when he tried to sell it. I tried to explain that was not how used bows were sold but I didn't know what I was talking about.

He already said if he decides to end it he will just OD on his insulin. Go to sleep and not wake up.

kach22i 03-07-2018 07:23 AM

I hate to say it, but a friend like that only can make you feel better about yourself as your problems pale by comparison.

KFC911 03-07-2018 07:30 AM

I hate to say this, but I would put distance between myself and him....life is just too short imo. I'd tell him, IF he really wants help, he's got my number, and I will do what I can.

Then don't wait by the phone....he ain't never gonna call. It sucks...but it is....

Absolutely, it is the parent's responsibility to teach the difference between right and wrong and usually that message needs to be delivered and reinforced prior to the teenage years to be effective. After that it's often too late to catch up.

But a person who reaches adulthood can still learn not to touch a hot stove top if their fingers get burned.
Take away the sensation of heat and they'll keep doing it until their fingers fall off.

Sound advice. If he wants help he'll ask, if he doesn't there's not much that can be done without getting drug into the swamp.

G, you are most certainly allowed to remove such vexation from your life. You don't need to stop caring, just stop thinking you can help him. I had to do it years ago with a self destructive friend. I had to let her go.

This man's illness is some kind of cognitive disorder, not intellectual. He's not stoopid. His thinking is whack.

He's in complete denial of negative outcomes because recognizing them would deny him his hedonistic pursuits.

If he is grossly overweight that is probably a huge factor in his ED.

sugarwood 03-07-2018 11:40 AM

Your friend is not only an idiot.
He is greedy.

The textbook con preys on greed.
He thinks he will get this pile of gold.
That's how the con works to extract money.

The rest is sunk cost fallacy.
