$50 means the exact same for them as it does to me. We both can buy the same with it.

The local pet store always asks if I want to donate and I have the perfect answer as anything I’m buying there is for a foster dog. “Every thing I spent today is a donation to the dog rescue I volunteer for.” That ends the ask.

I thought being a dick was a prerequisite to joining PPOT?

I posted this thread today out of sheer boredom. After reading a week's worth of "do you fart in an elevator, funeral, dentist office, workplace, etc..., then reading a thread about donating to pan handlers and virtually everyone (except me stating "hell no"), I thought I would just add another useless topic only to bet trashed by you and others.

Go to Hell, all of you!! I will do whatever the FU@$ I want and complain about if if I want to - It's my Party! And for the record, I'm a baby boomer, not a millennial. I also voted for Trump - how's that? And yes, she's a casher, maybe I am one too. Because of you, I'm going back to that store tonight and I'm gonna really be rude!
I'm not quite sure what you mean here. You presented a situation and asked if you were being rude. I said you were. Now you are doubling down on the PPOT version of "do these pants make me look fat?"

They do.

I don't think you are reading me quite correctly, my mistake for not being more clear. My life philosophy is to actively look for ways to make the life of the person next to me a little better, mostly in small ways. Family, friend, stranger, all the same to me. Ask Jessica at the Longhorn Steakhouse, she'll confirm. So when you asked if you were being rude, I set about to help both you and this poor cashier you so rudely accosted.

First, while you had an inkling that you were rude, you weren't quite sure. Hence the post. I confirmed that it was a dick move so instantly I'm being helpful. The next time you are in this situation you can think back to this thread and ask yourself, "does this person deserve my wrath especially since they have nothing to do with the root cause of my hostility?" You can ponder that for a moment and hopefully come to a proper conclusion. But don't think too long because other people are waiting in line. Let's try to be considerate of them.

From here it could have gone one of two ways. 1. You realize you were a dick and posted that you were going to go apologize to the cashier. That would make both your life and hers a little better. 2. You double down on being a dick.

Clearly you chose the latter. Being an old guy with the mindset of a millennial, I am not surprised.

But don't lose hope, there is still time to change. You can go back and apologize. Maybe get a chicken and some Walkerswood. After paying, give it to her and say something like, I'm sorry for being a jerk. She will laugh heartily and tell all her friends about this awesome guy who saw the error of his ways and gave her some jerk chicken, some assembly required.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Actually, I asked if I was being rude and you replied "what a Jackass"...it was a yes-or-no question. When someone agreed with me, you replied "That makes 2 dicks on this thread then."

Huh? This is not congruent with your own words right here. Maybe try harder.

Not the point.

If all you both have is $50.00 then you have a point.

But if all they have is $50.00 and you have $500.00 then not the same.

The clerk loathes asking you for a donation more than you loath being asked to make a donation. They didn't decide to ask for the fun of it. They don't get the money. Odds are, the clerks were all told something like, "You will ask each and every customer who comes through your line while on shift. If our secret shopper comes through your line and you don't ask, you'll be given one warning, then fired on the next offense."

You're within your rights to complain, but take it to the corporate office. Even the store manager didn't decide to make this a policy. It was a suit in that corporate office who rarely sets foot in the store and who doesn't have to face the wrath of the unhappy customers who shop in the store 3X/week and get asked to cough up extra money every single time.

Even the self checkouts ask for a donation. I wonder if the machines loath asking me.

Fred Flintstone has given many a dollar to children's charities over the years.
He sometimes answers my phone as well.

Many a time I have been a jerk. I pretty much know when, and I don't BS myself about it. Imagine all people that a cashier gets to meet in a single day. The average person doesn't give a care about the cashier. And that is just the average person. Half care even less.
''Yeah, but what about MY feelings ?'' People feel like jerks when they act like jerks. Own it.

It would be a shame if one simply smiled and said, ''Not today, thanks.'' I'll tell you what though. If I hear a bell at Christmas, I'll walk all the way across a parking lot to put a buck in the red bucket. Bah, HUMBUG to YOU, SIR !

Humbug I say, Humbug. ''I don't WANT to SHARE !'', said every three year old everywhere. But we love pictures of cats cuddling with dogs.

Go figure.

If a business collects x amount of money and donates it do they receive a tax deduction? Always wondered if that's the main reason they do this

I went to Whole Foods last night and spent $36 on dinner for one. Pretty expensive if you ask me, albeit I only ate 1/2 and the rest will be lunch today.

I rode the motorcycle which has bags so I don't get grocery bags at the store (fyi, they're almost illegal in Ca). The casher was very peppy and congratulated me for not using a bag and said I had a $0.05 reward and then asked if I wanted the $0.05 back or would like to donate it (didn't tell me where the donation would be going). I said no, I'll keep it. My bill came to $36.29 and then the cashier asked me if I wanted to round up to $37 and donate my change to "worlds women's fund" of something like that. I said no thanks and then left feeling like I was cheap - after spending $36 on dinner and not donating my $0.76 as asked to do so.

Five blocks later, I was at an intersection with a guy on the median asking for money. I gave him $10 because he looked like his leg was bent in half and he was in bad shape. So that's were my $0.76 goes and not to worlds women fund.

p.s. the guy at whole foods had the earring type that puts a large holes in your ear and had arms covered in tattoos. Personally, I'm surprised he has a job as a cashier but that is my own personal feelings about covering yourself in tattoos. I guess, as stated on this thread, that I shouldn't take out my donation frustration on the cashier, and in this case, I didn't but I was definitely thinking a big Fu$% Off. I suppose that in 25 years when this guy is still a cashier (probably with a few more tattoos), I shouldn't be rude and realize he's only a cashier following company policy. And me, being on a Porsche Forum, means that I can afford to give all my money to causes I no nothing about.

I believe that this is a "pass thru" and won't have any effect on the taxes. Basically, the money collected is not recorded as a revenue and the donation is not recorded as an expense.

I would be more curious if the money actually collected is the exact amount donated, sometimes those cups get emptied into someone's pocket.

I don't donate at points of sale anymore. Businesses are basically using your money as their "donation" and getting the tax benefits.

Trader Joe's and Costco don't do this ... that's who gets 90% of our grocery business. Personally, I practically never shop. My wife does. I go to work, so anything I am annoyed about there, I can justify by getting paid.

Never take out your frustration on the messenger. Put your energy into a call or letter to headquarters if you are annoyed. Or take your business elsewhere.
