A not so well set up 944

Falling asleep here with the news on . I just caught this .
A man was killed while he was trying to steal the catalytic convertor from a 944 in the parking lot of a Pittsburgh repair garage, I guess the jack slipped, and the car fell on him . To bad, so sad

Right before I clicked on this- I was thinking about the time someone stole a car stereo out of my 944.

Note to self- Things easy to steal out of a 944:
Stereo.
Spare tire.

FTFY - it's easier to steal them out of 4x4s in parking lots - you don't even need a jack

The cat was repurposed without my permission from one of my 944's by the good citizens of Charlotte North Carolina when parked outside.

The frustrating thing is an expensive part new is only worth a few bucks at most as scrap.

My scrap guy says that euro cats are worth more, as they usually have more platinum, or elements in them . The cat on a 944 is pretty large and heavy when you think about it .
I have a few 911 convertors on the shelf, and he is always salivating at them.
That being said, they usually target jeeps, and pick up. They just have to crawl under with a cordless sawzall, in probably 5 minutes with a sharp blade, and they are outta there.

I was getting $100 dollar bills for scrap cats a while back. I think it is down right now, but still got 60 ish last few. If you think about it, that is pretty quick money. Grab 5 cats in a few hours, and you are making good $ .

The stock catalytic convert on a 944 uses stainless steal and has no platinum.

The one that was "liberated" from my 944 was an aftermarket one.

I could be wrong, I just remember it in a 944 book that the 944 had a different catalytic converter design. I haven't referenced it lately.

That’s too bad. I hope he hadn’t done too much damage to the car before justice was served on him.

I had the cat ripped off of my Sentra SE-R ten years ago. Thieves reached underneath with a cutoff wheel. What puzzled me was that parked immediately behind me was a new 4x4 F-150 with far easier access to the cat. I had to get 2/3 of my exhaust replaced (including a NLA header secondary).

Close to on topic. Guy a few years back at the pretty much closed down Rolling Acres Mall in Akron. Stealing electrical wire and cut into a live 440 cable with big ol' cable cutters. Had metal handles.

They smelled him cooking.

Seems there are certain vehicles that are targeted for a) good access and b) good pay off. Gen1 Sequoias apparently fall into this category ...

I the UK, Mercedes Sprinter panel vans are apparently a favourite target for Catalyst theft. Easy to get under, and a very expensive part to replace.
