For you lawn guys!

I'm looking for an aerator/dethatcher combo. Wondering if anything like that exist? I haven't had any luck in my search. Really would like to not buy 2 separate attachments. Thanks in advance.
Steve

Dethatching need not be a regular routine for turf depending, of course. Once every couple three years is good. GF hires a landscaper every couple years to dethatch and rake so she can make sandwiches.

Aerating should be done at least annually in the fall. Spike (sometimes called plug) aeration is the best.

A local rental place probably has one with a bunch of plastic water cans for weight. Rent it, use it, empty it, take it back. Boom, done. No storage, no maint., no capital outlay.

I haven't seen a combo tool but I have connected one behind the other. I have pulled a dethatcher ahead of my plug aerator. Most times I'll pull my lawn sweeper behind the dethatcher and then pull the plug aerator after.

we threw away the neighbors last year. never used it.
big thing that attached to the back of her mower. looked like a plow that goes on a tractor except it had spike to aerate the grass.

On a side note: From the reading I did on spike vs plug aerators, It looks like many lawn care people recommend a plug aerator vs a spike type.

Thanks for the info. At this point i think I'll do as crowbob suggested and try renting the equipment.
Thanks again. Steve

You can rent an aerator but if I remember right they are heavy to load in an suv or half ton. I usually hand rake and get an outside guy to aerate about every three years. If we had a larger property would likely hire a guy to do both.

This was just on "Ask This Old House" on PBS. Probably go to their website and see them use one on a yard.

I rent a plug aerator once or twice a year. A bit of a beast to use, and load!, but nothing like it. Dont waste your time with a spike version. It does something but is not nearly as effective as a plug aerator.

Do your lawn east/west then north south.
