So They're $80K now? W124 E500
I've always liked these cars, curious what they cost new. This is a pretty nice looking one.

Anything attached to Porsche is pricey now especially this with such a cool story, I can't imagine what an Audi rs2 costs with 22k
I'm sure you saw the 914 with 5k go for nearly 100k? Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk |

The aftermarket AMG version (back when AMG was an independent shop) was called The Hammer. I think that was back around 1986 or 1987. You can look up the same Road & Track issue where Ruf's car was anointed Yellow Bird.
Then Mercedes decided to make a factory version a few years later, and badged it the 500E. Kind of a "Factory Hammer."

I've always loved those things. This one looks to be one of the best on the planet, so the price is probably justified. I remember when you could find those for $10k all day long, now even a rough driver is $20k+.

I've only read about these (or maybe it was a TV show)... not really my thing. And no, not 80K. I did grow up lusting for a 190E at one point.

Suspension and some other bits built by Porsche, engine I believe tuned by Porsche, similar to the Audi rs2
During the mid nineties Porsche was bleeding, the 993 was not the best seller so they commissioned some work for other brands Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk |

Shipped across town and assembled by Porsche. I think $85K was the MSRP when they first came out. Always wanted one. The hydropneumatic shocks I'm told are spendy.

Frankly, $85K silly, but if it closes then it's 85K.
I'd rather spend the 85K on a much more capable car. The 500 is nice, but it's not that special. Like spending 100K on a recent Vette. rjp

Even then, didn't seem worth it. I didn't find them that special, but what really killed it for me was the long list of serious and expensive things that go wrong with them. Just not worth it. |

These prices are silly. I had a 2009 S63 AMG which would destroy the 500e in every way. Can get that car for $25k in good condition.

As for the 993, is it really a case of poor sales, or just a very expensive car to manufacture in relation to what they sold for?

The 993 was expensive to build, hence why Porsche brought in Toyota to streamline production and cut product costs. It’s why the 986/996 was able to be sold at a reasonable price and still turn a profit.
The 500E is rare and special, hence the high price. One of the first super sedans, hand built by Porsche, developed by Porsche. Saying that Xxxxx car is better in every way is sorta missing the point. A brand new Camry will run circles around my 911SC, but I wouldn’t consider it a substitute either. Btw, I can’t wait for the RS2 to be legal for import. I need to start saving my money.

I agree with Matt, comparing your S63 to a car that is 25+ years older is ridiculous, guess what your S63 is also faster than Nick Mason's $30Million Ferrari GTO..and your point is?
Lots of incorrect responses here regarding the original "Hammer" it is... In a nutshell: A plain Jane 4 cylinder W124 that was bought brand new in late'85-'86 by AMG and completely dismantled and fitted with the 5.6L block from the 560SEC\SEL\SL and AMG's own (proprietary) quad cam 32V heads. It ran on CIS mechanical fuel injection and made 385-400hp. "Hammer" was a perfect description that Road and Track casually used when they tested the car and it stuck. If you want to really hit the nail on the head (to be chronologically correct), AMG built the very first variant of the "hammer" back in 1982/3 when they put the 5L from the W126 S-Class into a monochromatic candy apple red W123 Coupe with beautiful Recaro C's and Penta \ Ronal wheels. ITs a well known car for us '80s car and Benz \ AMG geeks

I had no idea about that! Makes the 996/Camry relationship even more solid!
