Snow: Make It Stop

It's unusual for us to get a snow storm past early March around here. We may get a single flurry in April that melts as it falls every few years.

We got hit with 9 inches of snow on March 24th. That melted during the week and we got hit with got hit with another 3 inches of snow on April 1st (Easter Sunday). That melted during the week and we got hit with another couple inches of snow last night (April 8th). It's supposed to hit 70º during the week, then next Saturday night the temperature is supposed to drop like a rock and we're supposed to get snow for the third Sunday/fourth weekend in a row.

I've lived in Illinois on and off for 32 years. I don't ever recall having this much snow in April.

billybek 04-09-2018 04:41 AM

Welcome to the club.
We are finally getting above the freezing point for most of the week and have been dumped on it seems like every single week.
Huge cold air mass sitting from the arctic down to the central States. Going to take a while to move that out and melt the snow....

GG Allin 04-09-2018 04:55 AM

I realized a long time ago, April is the single most disappointing month of the year around here.

onewhippedpuppy 04-09-2018 04:58 AM

We had two inches on Saturday morning, it was gone by afternoon. Then we had sleet on Sunday morning, it was gone by afternoon. I hate the winter. Where is my global warming Al Gore?

Mike Andrew 04-09-2018 05:16 AM

Forecast for the Upper Peninsula is between 20 and 33 inches next weekend with temps in 20's. Looking forward to some warm weather to wrap up some Pcar projects and get back on the road. Who knows when I can open my place in NW WI. Lakes are still thick with ice.
May have to sneak in one more ski weekend on the U.P. but I am ready for spring.

Crowbob 04-09-2018 05:26 AM

I'm already sick of next winter!

Rtrorkt 04-09-2018 06:01 AM

I came pretty close to moving there. Still wish that I had.

livi 04-09-2018 06:15 AM

Yup. Its strange how that global warming has turned out. Coldest march month here in Sweden in ages.

Late ski season... so there's that.

red-beard 04-09-2018 06:30 AM

That stupid Rodent in Pennsylvania was right...

LakeCleElum 04-09-2018 06:56 AM

I snowmobiled 20 minutes from the house last week. Snow-tel site up there claims a base of 121 inches right now.....We rode on fresh that day.

exc911ence 04-09-2018 07:26 AM

Still enjoying biblical rain here on the wet coast... anyone want to trade their ark for a 911SC?

CurtEgerer 04-09-2018 07:55 AM

Staying put in 85-degree FL for an extra month due to the crap weather to the north. Supposed to be in KY by now. The question is, will it snow for the Derby in May?

I was out all day Saturday between the snowflakes, running the log splitter with 2 sweatshirts, a hoody, a stocking cap, and gloves, and still had to go in 3 different times to wram up (30 degrees, with 25 mph wind). Most Aprils around here people are mowing thier yards by now, and the trees are starting to sprout leaves, in many places, but this year, the grass is still brown, and the ground frozen solid.....ARGGHHHH !

My water bottle sitting on the fender of my tractor actually developed ice crystals in it.....so ready for warmer weather.

wdfifteen 04-09-2018 10:05 AM

Snow here Saturday and again today (Monday). I don’t think this winter is ever going to end. I see friends who are normally happy being visibly more depressed and angry and I’m afraid it’s beginning to affect me too.

I don't believe I have S.A.D.S, but my mood is noticably better/lighter when the sun makes a rare appearence....BTW, light snow all day today again, so don't lean on my last nerve...OK ? LOL !

stealthn 04-09-2018 05:10 PM

Crappy thing is I wager we are in for sending major water south for a lot more flooding again.

pete3799 04-09-2018 05:48 PM

4 inches (5 in the higher elevations) Sat. and a dusting this morn. More snow showers coming tomorrow.

Record warm temperatures this winter at the North Pole. Higher average world temperatures are weakening the jet stream and allowing warm air and cold air to shift outside of boundaries normally controlled and set by the jet stream. Temperatures in the far arctic were above freezing this winter in months where the temperature average is usually -20 deg F.

Result ? Average temperatures are above normal, but you get an arctic blast, and the North Pole is relatively balmy. Balmy. Now there's a word.

billybek 04-10-2018 02:47 AM

La Nina year.

fastfredracing 04-10-2018 02:57 AM

It is weird, it feels like a typical spring morning here, with all the birds chirping, and the sun shining, yet, there is a blanket of snow, and it is 25 degrees out

ckelly78z 04-10-2018 07:10 AM

The tree huggers have renamed global warming....to....climate change. This way, no matter what happens, climate change can be blamed.

Take heed of this. When the snow is finally gone and the temps rise to civilized levels, the plants are going to explode with new growth. Right now, they're storing up whatever juices and packing them with sugars.

Around here, in pseudo-springs like this year, most things grow too fast for their own good and cool nights are better because they slow things down a bit.

vash 04-10-2018 07:30 AM

sorry folks.

hope your stuff thaws out soon.

Well said! I'm tired of winter.

legion 04-10-2018 11:54 AM

I usually have my car out by the end of March.

We're supposed to have three days of warm weather and then the temperature is going to drop again with possible snow on Sunday again. I'm just going to wait.

T.S. Eliot (1888–1965). The Waste Land. 1922.

The Waste Land

I. THE BURIAL OF THE DEAD

APRIL is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering 5
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.
Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee
With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade,
And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten,
And drank coffee, and talked for an hour.
Bin gar keine Russin, stamm’ aus Litauen, echt deutsch.
And when we were children, staying at the archduke’s,
My cousin’s, he took me out on a sled,
And I was frightened. He said, Marie,
Marie, hold on tight. And down we went.
In the mountains, there you feel free.
I read, much of the night, and go south in the winter.

What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,
You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
There is shadow under this red rock,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.
Frisch weht der Wind
Der Heimat zu,
Mein Irisch Kind,
Wo weilest du?
“You gave me hyacinths first a year ago;
They called me the hyacinth girl.”
—Yet when we came back, late, from the Hyacinth garden,
Your arms full, and your hair wet, I could not
Speak, and my eyes failed, I was neither
Living nor dead, and I knew nothing,
Looking into the heart of light, the silence.
Öd’ und leer das Meer...

Just got another big dumping here in MN, I just got back from my weekly early morning grocery run and the roads are drivable. I have to go into work in a few hours to blow snow- overtime pay and I just happen to be rebuilding my engine, so I am putting a positive spin on the snow!

flatbutt 04-15-2018 04:53 AM

I'm hearing that you're getting up to 3 feet!? Do us favor and make sure the door to the east is closed please?

ckelly78z 04-15-2018 05:20 AM

We are in the middle of getting 3-4" of rain with 45 mph winds, yesterday in the 30s, today supposed to be in the 60s, tommorow........more snow.

Just shoveled a couple tonnes of snow off my lawn onto the street yesterday. There is still 6" of solid ice in a couple sections.
My goal is to have green grass by August. August might be pushing it, probably be closer to September.

More snow tomorrow.

GH85Carrera 04-15-2018 07:12 AM

We had yet another hard freeze last night. We are getting good at covering the tender plants. With luck tonight is the last freeze. I don’t remember so many late freezes here. It has happened before, but not over and over so late.

legion 04-15-2018 07:25 AM

We have been upgraded to rain today! And the high is a blistering 42º!
