S&W 625JM vs 627-5 Pro

Revolveritis has hit me (see earlier thread on 27-2 6" gun I own) and I've just asked my FFL to order a 627-5 Pro (8 shot, .357, 4" bbl). The gun is currently out of stock so I've got some time to think about this.

625JM is 45ACP 6 shot. Gun will be used for screwing around at the range and some USPSA action shooting type sports. I don't care about being competitive so much as I do enjoying the firearm and getting better with it.

the 627 has rubber grip which I would switch to wood. after said change it will run about $150 more than the 625JM.

appreciate any insight into these guns you guys might have. I did consider the GP100 but after handling it I found I greatly prefer the trigger and overall feel of a S&W.

I have the 625. Well-built, well-balanced and fun to shoot. Highly recommended. Get many moon clips!

Do you reload? I think 45acp is about the cost of 38 special, less than 357.

If you want to shoot USPSA/IDPA/IPSC though the 6 shot limit of the 45 revolver will hurt. Of course, moon clips cost less than speed loaders...

I don't think you can go wrong with either, but you may want to decide what you REALLY want to do or be able to do with it.

I reload 28ga but not getting into pistol reloading.

Looking further into the shooting orgs I'm seeing suggestions that the 625 is the gun for IDPA but only idpa due to the mentioned 6 shot limitation. I also see comments that the 45ACP is easier to manage with moon clips due to the shortness of it. I definitely like the look of the 625JM better but for practical purposes the 627 seems to make more sense.

I also like the idea of being able to shoot 38spl at the range for easy recoil but having 8 rounds of .357 available should things go sideways here in the good ol' USA.

It doesn't sound like there is any quality or shootability difference between the two.

LOVE my 686+. I have one in 6", my oldest son has one in 4". The rubber grips are ugly but super functional, they make the S&Ws nicer to hold and shoot than my Colt Trooper mk3 with nice Pachmyr wood grips. But the Colt is definitely prettier.

They only get better as they get bigger. My 6” is just silly accurate, way better than I am.

i think the 686 is a smaller (L) frame size and in .357 would be 6 or maybe 7 shot?

the 627 is N frame (big) and 8 shot in .357

Correct, 686+ is 7 shot and 686 is 6 shot.

For the love of God and all that is holy - lose those rubber grips. They have no place on a proper revolver. Rubber grips are for golf clubs and softball bats.

Just kidding. Kind of... You probably noticed right away that the wood grips supplied with new Smiths well and truly suck. I can't blame you for replacing them. They are only about half the width of their old target grips, whose profile they share and, as a result, simply do not spread the recoil across a wide enough part of the hand.

Quality wood grips are available from sources like Steve Herrett, Eagle, and others. Eagle is now even making exact reproductions of original S&W target grips, complete with recycled medallions and everything. All of these really dress up a revolver and do a very good job with recoil.

Here is a Model 19 with Herrett "Roper" grips and a Model 29 with Eagle grips. Both are very comfortable to shoot with their respective full-house loads.

Those are pretty, but it seems like the checkering would really improve the grip over smooth like those.
